At the start of the year, we posted that we longed for a successor to the Xperia active and Xperia go. We saw no such low/mid-level rugged water resistant handset in 2013 and so far in 2014, we’ve still seen no sight of one. This may change in 2015, as Digitimes is reporting that Sony Mobile plans to launch sub-$300 water resistant handsets.
Digitimes cites sources at Taiwan’s handset component supply chain. It claims that Sony wants to partner with these component suppliers to push waterproof handsets in the low to mid-range sector. Perhaps it means we may see water resistant versions of the Xperia E1 and Xperia M2 next year, which sounds good to us.
