Privilege Movies app_resultSony will drop support for its Privilege Movies application on 30 September 2014. The Privilege Movies Team is currently sending out the email below to users of the application. The email simply says that the “Privilege Movies service will be closing” and gives no reason for the decision.

The Privilege Movies app was used by Sony Xperia users to download a selection of free movies when purchasing a new device. The app was only live in certain countries within Europe, Asia, Middle East and South America. For other users in Europe and the US, these free movies could be added to their Sony Entertainment Network account, so bypassing this app altogether in favour of the Movies app.

Sony says that users should download all movies to your device before 30 September 2014. It also suggests users not to delete the app as it will no longer be available to download after that date. You had better save that APK, although it is not entirely clear if the servers will remain live after the end of September to download the movies.

We can’t say for sure if the service is closing for all countries (the only emails we have received on this are from India) or just a select few. The Privilege Movies website and Play Store listings make no reference to this closure. We’re also not sure if this affects both the Privilege Movies and Privilege Movies 2.0 apps or just one of them. The latter was used to download free movies when purchasing the Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z2 Tablet. If we hear any more on this we’ll keep you posted.

Sony is sending the following email to Privilege Movies users

We’d like to let you know that the Privilege Movies service will be closing on the 30th September 2014. Don’t worry, you’ll still be able to access & enjoy your movies straight from your Xperia device.

To continue enjoying your movies:
1. Make sure you’ve downloaded all of your movies to your phone, tablet and/or SD card before the 30th September 2014.
2. Make sure you start playing each your movies to check they have downloaded correctly, and you have acquired the license for your device.
3. Do not delete the Privilege Movies application from your device. You’ll need it to access and watch your movies in the future. Please note, if you delete the application after the 30th of September 2014, it will no longer be available for download and your movies will be deemed unplayable.
