Sony Ericsson ST25i to be called Xperia U on release?

Looks like Sony is using just one letter for their devices… Looks nice. At least for me, make them look more sexy than already are.

Could have Xperia X or Xperia Z in future as well then. :/

it is just the same in the case of Mercedes S, E, C, A, B… etc. there shouldn’t be actual meaning for the naming 

Galaxy S, iPhone 4S, it isn’t a Sony thing, from what I can see.

i think there are 3 xperia nxt series
the S series for high end device
U series for low end device and we are waiting for the mid end series device

As with any new range of devices with clever names, the same problem occurs every single time – what to do when you bring out new models, especially at different times and the whole range gets mixed up. It’s probably why so many companies end up swapping and changing. Model numbers today, a name tomorrow, a letter the day after, then repeat… Each time, you see all the press releases explaining the clever new naming strategy, and the consumer remains unconvinced, not bothered and often extremely confused.

Last year, Sony Ericsson effectively had the 2011 range (all pretty much built on the same platform) – and I wonder if there’s a way to make better use of the year to stop the above problems. They could create models to fit in the distinct categories, rather like a car maker would, and then have a model year to identify which version of the phone it is. So you’d have had the Xperia arc 2012 edition (or from now on the Xperia S 2012 edition, Xperia S 2013 edition etc). I am not saying you write the year on the device itself, but it could still be identified as such online, on the external packaging and marketing etc.

It also assumes that manufacturers will work on an annual cycle, but for the most part they do – and with longer contracts, there’s little point releasing phones every few months. A road map can still seek to stagger the release throughout the year.

Or, you have like Samsung or Apple, a product that just gets a new number – but I think there’s another way that can be a bit more clever. Samsung isn’t surely going to continue until they’re releasing the Galaxy S 50?!
