Latest Sony Xperia phones announced for South East Asia

by XB on 21st June 2012

in Hands On, Xperia acro S, Xperia go, Xperia ion, Xperia miro, Xperia Neo, Xperia tipo

Sony Mobile yesterday held a media event in Singapore where it launched the latest six Sony Xperia handsets for the South East Asia region (Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia). As expected, no new Xperia models were announced, instead we saw the official launch of six handsets for the region including the Xperia acro S, Xperia go, Xperia ion, Xperia miro, Xperia neo L and Xperia tipo.

Our man on the ground (owl_order) got hands-on with most of the devices and came away with positive thoughts. The event itself encouraged creativity in line with Sony Mobile’s current “Made of Imagination” marketing slogan. There was an open canvas where the media was invited to paint their own creations along with coloured sands to rub into the rugged smartphones.

Whilst some may bemoan the lack of an announcement for a high-end flagship, it is quite clear that Sony Mobile is targeting the low-end smartphone segment and sees it as a good growth opportunity. After all, market research firm Canalys recently estimated that more than 40% of smartphones in China will be priced under $200 by 2015.

This was a point echoed by Matthew Lang, Head of Sony Mobile SEA & Oceania Customer Unit saying that the expanded portfolio left Sony Mobile “in a much better position to meet the diverse consumer needs of emerging markets such as Indonesia and Malaysia” and that these phones will “strengthen our footprint in Southeast Asia markets”.

Anyway, check out the gallery below where you’ll find pictures from the event along with some hands-on photos with the phones. As we’ve previously seen, three new apps for the Xperia range will be introduced (Walkman, Album, and Movies) and you can see some photos of these. Towards the end you’ll also see something we haven’t seen before, notification settings for the lock screen on the Xperia ion. See all of the pictures below.

    ahhhh…
I thought Xperia GX international model was going to be announced
    feeling a little bit disappointing

  • mode893

When will Sony learn that for their low-end/entry level phones to sell they need an ultra high-end cutting edge anchor as their brand ambassador. People buy Samsung low ends because of the name and branding the higher end devices bring, and it has always been the same with Nokia before. Without a strong branding image of a leader in mobile technology, they won’t be able to sell the entry level devices as much as they hope to. It is obvious and has been proven from their 2007 marketshare decline. Sheesh…why do I even bother with them.

  • Coollead

Why would they announce the “international” model of a phone at an event for Asia, where the phone is already announced?

  • Coollead

As far as I’ve seen, their low-end sets sell pretty damn well? Not to mention that they’re #1 in marketshare in Japan (with the Acro HD)…once the SX comes out, they’ll be unstoppable.

  • DragonClaw

I had said it long back. It’s still that way. Xperia Hayabusa is nothing but the Acro S. It will fit in the leaked time line perfectly. The next flagship model by Sony accorfing to the leaked time line will be the MINT I which will be released inQ4 or next year, and that will be the international GX.
    Thanks,
    Rick

  • rafi

Maybe sony not thinking like crappy sammy. The low end spec from sony offer more advance if you look into sammy mid range smartphone. Its just not everything about highend product only will make people go for low and mid devices. Its base on people pocket. And for me sony offer all kind of smarphone level from low to highend for consumer to choose and decide which one fit better to their needs. And put some trademark for each devices. Put all sammy from low to high end and sony from low ti high end. You will get the total idea.

  • owl

Guess who drew the liquid energy logo splashing into water.

  • acro s not release in malaysia?

  • YES! Businessmen with phones in pictures! Finally a little bit of professionalism. LG is getting highly annoying.

  • mr.zatan

    Xperia GX

  • foxy

    new photo album is amazing

  • megane198

No concrete announcement for other Southeast Asian countries? Thailand, Philippines, Brunei, etc. Only these three? I’m waiting for the acro s or the ion. Ion is already available in HongKong. Sigh.

  • I feel you bro, I was waiting for it as well..

  • 1) Why is Indonesia getting for choices especially more color for Ion and Acro S than Singapore?
    2) Why still no news yet on Xperia GX?
    3) What is that 2 small metal stips on the side of the Acro S?

I wonder I should end my wait and get either the Ion or Acro S as I have painfully skipped the Xperia S. I love the waterproof idea but the screen is smaller. I am think if I should wait a little longer for the GX?

  • rudeqa

i’m feeling the same as you
but let’s just wait for the GX :/

  • hansip87

Well, as always Indonesian people are consumerist so Sony needs to attract them a lot to get any ROI ;)

  • AlexBurnout

    Damn… We want international GX

  • MyLive

Looks like Indonesia would get complete all that 6 new phone at the first time.. You better have a good promotion here on Indonesia SONY.. Coz so far samsung is leading here and very aggresive with that galaxy lines up promotion.. And I’ve seen a lot people using galaxy around here not as much as xperia.. Pretty got bored already LOL.. BTW how much is xperia Go? Looking at the pictures above makes me think to upgrade my Live Walkman with this. Coz Xperia Go is ‘more walkman’ than the Live Walkman itself considering the clear bass and stereo availability.. And you’ll get rugged phone as big plus!!

  • ThilinaC

They will be unstoppable if they release SX in time instead waiting too much like SXS & Ion.Anyway thinking to replace my Neo V with SX or Acro S on September BUT the problem is non of the models are released yet :/

  • ThilinaC

Not SX I meant GX,geez the new names are little confusing lol

  • Yes , many Galaxy user here, but most of them is low end.
Blackberry still the King here, thx for their BBM

  • Any possible Xperia ION will release in first week of July in malaysia?!!!! I need it right now ==

  • XperiaBlog

No firm announcement from Sony on the other regions right now, sorry!

  • alfino

when xperia acro s will be launched in Indonesia I really want it! and when the international version of the Xperia GX was launched in Southeast Asia because we wait it!

  • owl

    1. The which-models-go-to-which-countries list is not final. The telcos in each country may have a say on which models they want to take in. According to the press kit, the Tipo Dual is only bound for Indonesia, so I asked about that, and this is the answer I got.
    2. These models are very new. The Go and Acro S were only announced last month, and the Tipo, Miro and Tipo Dual just barely two weeks ago. Not sure about you, but these four models are good enough to pacify me for a couple of months at least.
    3. I was curious as well, but the people handling the Acro S didn’t seem to know a lot about it… Sony Mobile “outsourced” organising the event to a 3rd party, and he’s an employee under the company, not Sony Mobile.

Well the Acro S and Ion are identical phones… to the extent that the people who attended the event (read: people who blog about these things) had trouble telling them apart. That said… http://twitter.com/owl_order/status/215632745630666752

  • hansip87

Seems like Sony is taking it easy now since too few S4 from Snapdragon even HTC One S relegated to S3 version. S4 will only be for select markets (Japan and US for now) while the rest will stay with S3.. Oh well.. At least my Ray would live longer in my hand :)

  • DJ

Wow what a major fucking disappointment. I’ve been checking xperiablog like a hundred times a day ever since they announced the GX and SX in hopes for news regarding the international version. Every single one of us was expecting something huge today. Either the int’l GX or the Mint but my fucking god Sony just fucked eeeeeeeeeeevryone in the ass by unveiling nothing. Absolutely nothing. They didn’t even mention it. I’m THIS close to ordering a One X or GS3. Sony better do something and fast. I mean seriously, first the ultra delay with the ion, then the FB Miro garbage and now this.

  • So sad :(

  • SomeBody

    Acro S – LT26w, Hayabusa LT29i, (not sure but maybe) Mint – LT30i

  • SomeBody

Sony also said they will come up with a quad-core next year, then they pointed out a few months later that maybe things will happen faster (so it should come out in 2012Q4 or 2013Q1). If Mint is the international Xperia GX, then the GX and the quad-core monster’s release date would be too close. So close that Sony couldn’t sell enough of the GX before the monster phone hits the shelves. In my opinion Hayabusa IS the international GX (2012Q3) and the phone with the S4PRO chipset will be released in 2013 march. Makes sense to me ;)

  • Yeah… Thanks sony… You release 7 handset at the Same time in Indonesia…!

  • Ashish Romea Xperia

In India dint is no 1 with 46%, share in the 12-20 k . It beats Samsung which has 34% share :-) next id topping the 20-30 n 30plus category
    XPERIA rocks

  • Ashish Romea Xperia

    Sony is no 1 *

  • AsadMulla

there are now so many handsets, I cant name the ones in the picture. sad time. year ago I could name any SE handset.

  • DragonClaw

Look at the prices at the leaked Chart.
    http://androidos.in/2012/01/sony-2012-android-line-up-leaked-with-prices/

Xperia Hayabusa has a price too close to the Xperia S.

Xperia Mint is really ont he other hand really costly and has to be the trump card for Sony. And that will be S4 dual cores. And obviously not S4 Quad cores.

    Thanks,
    Rick

    Xperia ion – ?
    Xperia miro – AFFM ?
    Xperia neo L – Atlas
Xperia tipo – Tapioca (Xperia Mini successor)

  • jim

I was hoping for the Xperia GX international announcement too. Im seriously considering One X or GS3 too, and waiting for my arc to receive ICS (SI 1246-9197 still not available! what a joke) is pushing me more to move to other top end devices. Sony has been very slow this year to me.

Is it me or the Ions button layout is weird? i was thinking back, home, menu, search not menu, home, back, search.

  • hamboy

As expected, no new Xperia models were announced”

LOL, ‘as expected’? This time last week you guys were spreading rumours about an Xperia Z

  • syazh

shit just bought xperia s..and now ion just come to malaysia….jammed…never mind i will soon get ics for xperia s….i guess i just need to wait for the quadcore….

  • owl

The pic at the first paragraph, from left to right, with key recognising features

Ion (4.6″, the largest Xperia to date, and comes with a capacitive search button, has a metal back like Xperia P)
Go (3.5″ waterproof, very similar to Miro, I recognise them by their slightly different chins, and the bright yellow phone is also the Go, which looks fantastic IMO)
Acro S (the largest after Ion, lacks a search button, all ports have covers as it is also waterproof)
Neo L (the design is very close to last year’s series, no problem recognising)
Miro (very similar to Go, except that its chin is more curved and is a little metallic-like)
Tipo (smallest and thickest, Tipo Dual has an additional button on the right to switch SIM)

    hope this helps ;-)

  • Wutthichai
  • owl

you know, i didn’t notice that. and i really agree. S(E) had always placed the back button to the far left. maybe their argument with this phone is to put the most frequently used two in the centre. or maybe having the back button to the left will make it hard to reach with the right thumb while holding it one-handedly with the right hand, seeing the huge monster that is Ion.

See this… The SonyXP community page just wont give credit for the pictures on this Blog Entry.

They use your photo and paste your watermark for OWN Commercial use.

  • owl

shit. that photo was stolen fast.

i personally took that picture. i have the full resolution, 12MP, unretouched JPEG in my SD card. and since the only party i gave my pictures to is xperiablog, i have to say, this very blogpost is the original source of that image. need more convincing? the xperiablog watermark in the image here is easier to remove that the gigantic Sony XP xperiance logo in that link you have.

if only they knew what was going through my head while i was trying to frame that picture, they’d consider giving me credit for it.

  • See this… The SonyXP community page just wont give credit for the pictures on this Blog Entry. They use your photo and paste their watermark , may be for OWN Commercial use?
I just wonder did xperia blog give them permission to do this?

    https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=413583658684316&set=a.402606509782031.90290.330413707001312&type=1&theater

  • owl

yeah, it’s a little unfair, considering how much effort i took into framing the “perfect” shot.

but they don’t seem to be using it for commercial purposes as i don’t think they’re earning money out of it. plus, afterall, we’re all xperia fans, are we not?

i’ll leave the final decision to xperiablog moderators.

  • that Thai’s sonyXP always like this.
Xperiablog must be more careful or else…

  • Wutthichai

    So…saddddd

  • eak

for the South East Asia region (Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia). why not have Thailand ???

  • lav verma

damn it!Still no dates(NO Q3 is not a date it is an effing period of 3 months) C’mon how hard is it for Sony to tell on what date are they gonna ship devices and which devices end up where.

  • owl

oO. never knew carriers have that much say on the design of handsets. thanks for the tip.

  • rauss

which 1 is better, acro s or ion?

  • lim

xperia go how much in malaysia ?

  • Grishm

Dude, how on the Earth could a lower mid-end phone(read Xperia Go) be sold for INR 25000?! It might cost no more than INR 15000-16000.

  • Grishm

Apart from display size(Ion’s is 4.55″ where as Acro S’ is 4.3″) both of the phones are practically same. I’d suggest Acro S as it would come with dust and water proof feature.

  • Grishm

No Xperia GX and SX at CommunicAsia 2012?! Disappointing! Moreover, Xperia Ion which was unveiled way back in January is hitting the stores NOW?!

Sony is digging its own grave! :|

sorry i am wrong, some website says it was 25000.
