Android 4.1 Jelly Bean now running on NovaThor U8500 reference chipset

ST-Ericsson’s NovaThor U8500 chipset powers four of Sony Mobile’s 2012 Xperia line-up: the Xperia P, Xperia U, Xperia go and Xperia sola. Whilst only the Sony Xperia P has so far received the Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich update, it should be available for the other handsets in the not too distant future.

Moving beyond ICS, ST-Ericsson recently published a video showing that it now has Android 4.1 Jelly Bean running on the NovaThor U8500 reference platform. Sony Mobile has still yet to confirm which phones Android Jelly Bean will be coming to, but if you want to see how well it performs on the NovaThor chipset then check out the video below.

What can we see here: Animation works good, but do not forget about UI – it is from Samsung devices. Do you remember the STYLISH ANDROID from SONY? Then you can support the concept “NEW ANDROID for SONY devices” – to make it availible: vote, post comments, support it and amaze here: https://plus.google.com/u/0/b/103207945010433772457/103207945010433772457/posts

After a few days with ICS in my P, I must say that I am impressed. All the ICS features running smoothly, no bugs whatsoever, and a beautiful Sony skin on top of ICS. What else could I ask? I think there is a minimum lag in comparison to the Gingerbread build but it’s almost not noticeable. Maybe the Jelly Bean update could take care of this but even if I stayed with ICS, I’d be very happy.

let me understand this, so ST Ericsson has a jelly been running on a sony phone but sony does not have one yet?

  • If I understand it correctly this is a machine used by developers. So it’s not a phone, but more of a computer using U8500 and a screen the size of those using the U8500.
Also, they’ve merely put the drivers in, with vanilla. They have to do that before Sony can continue the work, as to not double up workload, and finish it with their own skin and features.

If sony dont upgrade U, Sola and go to JB will lose most buyers and go down in the list of sellers.

I’m waiting jelly bean for Xperia S ;)

  • now now…cut the crap with ICS and get us Jelly bean :P

Sony anounced the Sola (march 2012) as ready for 4.0 ICS. I bought mine in may. At that time Sony promised 4.0 ICS for 2nd quarter 2012. September – No signs of 4.0 ICS.
Two weeks ago my Asus tablet received 4.1 JB. They didn’t even promise to bring it.
Sony, please forget about 4.0. Skip it. Don’t mention updates. Bring them.
Until I read in the forums that Sony fulfills it’s promises, don’t count on my wallet anymore.
