Xperia Z Android 4.2.2If you are curious to know how Sony’s Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean firmware will play out on your Xperia Z then check out the video below. Okay, the video is in Czech so you probably won’t know what he’s talking about, but it gives a good overview of what to expect.

The update will introduce a number of new features to the Xperia Z including a transparent notification bar, native DUALSHOCK 3 support, lockscreen widgets, add small apps from widgets, select quick settings and a Daydream screensaver option. It doesn’t look like Photo Sphere has made it though. Click through for the video demo.

This video shows the lockscreen widgets in action, which are not included in the above video. [Thanks AMG38!]

Thanks Davide!

    Really not worth a blogpost…

  • Herman

This is great for Xperia Z owners to see what they’ll get!

I wish the Xperia S had DUALSHOCK 3 support though.
Oh well, as long as the next update will fix the 1080p recording issue, I’m okay with it :)

  • Aman Singh Kakar

wtf no photosphere….what the fuck is wrong with sony???????

  • AsadMulla

I really didn’t expect 4.2 to land on XZ any time soon. So to see that its available now (even though its a developer rom) is quite a surprise. Good work Sony

  • Herman

What the F is wrong with you, buying something you don’t like?
You get what you paid for. Anything from an update is an extra, you can’t really be mad about that.

If you don’t like it, don’t get a Sony device and don’t complain.

  • Aman Singh Kakar

i have had sony phones since i was 14, i have only bought sony and will continue to in the future, but photosphere is the main attraction of 4.2 and it is sad that a company with so much prowess in imaging tech has not been able to bring it to us.

  • Alex Frías

Do you realize that photosphere is not open source and is only included in the Nexus 4? Ask anybody with any android smartphone with 4.2.2 that is not a Nexus 4.

  • Rochana

    Is Anything Change here ?

looks like same as some x8 custom roms :D

  • Jhonbert Magana

So you mean to tell us that we just have to accept the bugs that jb update brought? Like wifi issues. And video recording? “You get what you paid for. Anything from an update is an extra” :)

  • Aman Singh Kakar

oh….but i had read on androidccalls.com that photosphere was stock on 4.2.2…

  • Aman Singh Kakar

and manyy aosp roms on xda have photosphere…so i guess it is stock with 4.2.2

  • Jhonbert Magana

Didn’t even show how editing lock screen looks like.

  • falesh chaudhary

WTF where is lockscreen demo…is it really necessary to show android version 4.2.2 hundred times…by clicking clicking…what a waste they cant make an english version…

  • nops

Photosphere is not open source. It’s closed source. That’s why none of the non-Google phones have photosphere.

  • Aman Singh Kakkas

You’re seriously dumb. Dude, it’s AOSP! Go check CM roms. None of them have it.

  • Mahesh

wtf is wrong with u, if u want photosphere get yourself a nexus, don’t cry here -_-

  • AMG38

Guys, here we get a better short review of 4.2.2 on XZ.

  • AMG38

    it’s soo awesome.. just AWEsome

  • Lucian

The only thing that I wanted to see was lockscreen widgets…

  • Jonfensu

JozaCmar make the worst video-reviews. USELESS: Title in english but SPEAK in Czech. And in every video He flips the phone – Menu button – Back to Homescreen – Swipe here and there -Settings – About Phone, in 15 minutes!

  • roeshak

To be honest. Not a lot new from Sony. Just the raw Google updates here. Nothing really new from Sony at all. With so little customisation, wonder why it takes ages to get their software out and without too many bugs.
At least we’re getting the Google updates so that’s something to be pleased about.

  • choomers

Herman expects everyone to take it up the ass from corporations- it’s how he was brought up. Don’t pay him any attention :)

I’m tempted to unlock my bootloader now

  • jag

Wow! I want it now! I hope they will release the update by next week hehe

Photosphere is not open source by Google, no phone in market will get it, this include latest S4 and One.

Photosphere only available for Nexus series or Pure Android edition phone.

  • Andrew Tan

lockscreen widget is there, I am running it now.

  • Billy de Fretes

stop as donkey… it’s only for nexus.. if you have any profs that photosphere in others then show to us

  • Billy de Fretes

stock 4.2.2 in galaxy nexus and nexus 4

  • AnP

I don’t get it… Why is it everyone expects HUGE changes everytime? Not necessary the ROM should look different everytime! What’s important is ease of use, smooth running of the OS with as many least bugs or issues. And people, please… Sony’s UI looks way better & closer to stock in many ways. The lesser customization, the better. Not like Samsung where UI looks like absolute SHIT with every new plastic phone they bring out. Get real…

  • roeshak

Yep! You’re absolutely right. His reviews aren’t really reviews. It’s not so much the fact that it’s not in English, the world if made up of many nationalities with different languages, but the fact that he seems to find menus strangely interesting.
definitely the worst reviewer out there.

  • roeshak

These phones will always be compared with other phones.
Look at just how much customisation Samsung does but still gets its software out months before Sony.
I’m sorry but with this sort of lean android Rom, Sony have no excuse for being so late. It’s virtually stock android Sonyfied with their custom skin.
Just shows how far ahead Samsung is on software development, and they wonder why Samsung flagships literally fly off the shelves.
Sony Ericsson did better with customisation, Sony seems to be going down the road of keep it clean and lean which is all very well and good but I’m afraid you can’t make people wait months and in some cases a year for stock android. Not good enough!

The door is wide open and the colourful world of Touchwiz and iOS awaits you. Heck they are so similar I can’t tell them apart.

FYI Android 4.2 for Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 has been delayed, and this is from a company which only updates around 6 phones a year. Excellent support I say.

Did you even think about what you wrote before you wrote it. The s3 and note 2 are 2012 devices. At least they’ll get 4.2 and possibly beyond. Remind me again where the S and T are. They’ll probably die with 4.1.
With this type of weak uncompetitive software, Honami better be packing the most amazing camera ever seen on a phone otherwise Samsung’s March to glory will just increase in intensity and pace.

  • Ian

Has the camera and It’s compression improved? If so, how big are the changes?

  • Piyo Piyo

S3 has been updated to JB ever since october. I did an update then. However, it has been the worse mistake ever. It made the phone close to unusable. Xperia S has been the same as well, only slightly better than S3. Unfortunately, when it comes to updates the only company that does it properly are HTC and Nokia. They actually test their software properly before releasing them. What good is an update that brings new features to a phone, but brings more bugs to its basic features?

  • Anton Avdyushkin

90% of reviews maded by phone users looking exactly like this

  • maxiobor

I understand the reviewer and its even worse… He repeats every 5th word 2 times and really doesnt tell anything new… He shows everything but we dont care about the old optiona omg… Definitely the worst reviewer…

  • khoja50cal

    Why no photosphere :(

  • Cristi13

Yeah sure, you updated your s3 and it was unusable but your Xs was so much better(and this with ics)…sure you did. How come, i’ve seen many people who updated their s3’s and never got problems.I don’t know why you and many people here hate samsung but as a xperia s owner I must admit that samsung are much better(in software)thansony and xperia s was never a better phone than s3. Sony is just treating us like idiots and I’m sorry for anyone that doesn’t see this.

    Maybe CyanongenMod, I don’t know.
It is not an Open Source feature as it is ONLY for nexus devices.

  • Bassanova

Hello! Whatever the firmware looks like. I just needed a function – a camera shutter button, whether power button or volume button.

i gotta feeling he repeat words too much !

and i thought im the only one who got that feeling !

  • kumbangdesa

not so many different with 4.1.2..

  • Rob

Shame they didn’t put Siri in there too.. or Apple maps!

A company as big as Sony has to be able to take whatever they want and shove it in the phones, right?

    Go home, Guest.. You’re drunk!

  • ProWeirdo

You’re right, I speak Polish so I can understand them a little. I generally hate these f..tards from Xperia.cz for posting videos in English title and speaking Chech! What a logic.

The only thing I look forward in this update is the transparent navigation bar at the bottom. At least it makes my screen look like a 5 inch phone in the home screen, instead of being a 4.7 inch phone. Breaks my heart, that black bar at th bottom :(

  • Aman

Dude did you seriously think before you wrote here?
just adding 1 to 4.1 does not make it 4.2.. Samsung makes no effort what so ever to change to something new and believe me I have had Samsung phone. But no more man.. Yes Sony have horrendously delayed the Xperia S JB update but when it is finally out why do people start cribbing almost immediately.. Use the stuff before you start crying.

  • Aman

    Actually yes :-P
After I read that he/she surely is mad.!!
