Xperia Z1 LTE United StatesSony has finally made available the unlocked LTE version of the Xperia Z1 (C6906) in the United States. The phone is being sold through the Sony Store website for $619.99 in all three colours (black, purple and white). However, only the black version is in stock at the time posting. The purple and white colours are backordered with an estimated ship date of 30 April 2014.

The unlocked HSPA+ version of the Xperia Z1 (C6902) went on sale last October. Since then, T-Mobile US had exclusivity of the LTE-enabled Xperia Z1s ( C6916), which launched in January. The Xperia Z1s comes with 32GB of internal storage (16GB in the C6906) and a change in placement of the front-facing camera. We imagine that T-Mobile had a timed exclusivity on the LTE model before Sony was allowed to offer the unlocked version.

The question for US buyers is how interested are you – especially now that the Xperia Z2 has been announced? Obviously, who knows when Sony will release the Xperia Z2 into the US, after all Sony’s track record here isn’t great. We’d love to hear your opinions below.

To be honest, I’d rather have the Xperia Z1 Compact anyway.

  • I’d strongly prefer the Z1 Compact (with full US LTE band support) or the Z2. The Z2 specs show LTE bands that cover the whole world, much like the Z Ultra. This is tempting still. :)

  • The Xperia Z1 is still an amazing phone. I don’t even regret buying it just before the Z2 was announced at all (as I knew what was coming due to leaks – thanks again leakers ;D).

For the relatively low price (or rather, ‘not extremely high price’) here in Europe the Z1 is still pretty much on par with current released flagships like the HTC One M8 and Galaxy S5, while being much cheaper. Of course, only the Z2 notably tops the Z1 for now :)

Xperia S still better smartphone ever.

  • Timbo1

    good luck with that….

  • Wolf0491

Saw Z2 on ebay other day for just a bit more…

  • JHMBB2

Why wasn’t this available when the rest of world received it half a year ago?

  • nfs2010

This is a joke – I hope Sony learns a good lesson this time. z2 is around the corner and whoever really wanted an LTE capable unlocked z1 already bought one loooong time ago from Canadian sellers on eBay.

It’s too bad that Sony dragged their feet with the release here. While the Z1S may be doing well on TMo all those who wanted an unlocked phone already went through dealers, who now even now have a lower price than Sony

  • TechGuyChris

+1 for making me laugh. not in a bad way. this made my day :-P

  • jonyah

I would have bought this 6 months ago. Only option was to import it for a bit more. Sony, get the Z2 here now. Learn your lesson. You’ve already screwed up with ebooks, tvs and computers. Don’t screw up your mobile business too.

  • goon3r

I understand they are trying to build a relationship with T-Mobile, but this whole situation with the Z1 was just ridiculous.

the one with “a bit more” are for bids… and it usually ends up going up to around 1k… the cheapest you can get right now is from a US seller “never_msrp”, at least for now… there’s even a crazy HK dude trying to sell the Z2 for 3k USD..

  • Ziich

Why would you get the z1 now at that price when you could either get it cheaper from 3rd party retailers or wait a week or two for the z2 at a similar price

  • Wolf0491

Yeah that’s one I was talking about. $770 ish
I bought from that seller before

  • timothy chan

I think i bought the TX, the Z1 and Z2 from that guy lol, he must really like me by now..

  • Guest

I suspect that price will fall very soon.

  • HardyHarHar

You can’t blame them though… 1st Americans are either
    1. Don’t care about super phones at all. As long as they can surf and call then it’s good until it lasts.
    2. IPhone freaks. Unless it’s an iPhone then it’s a no no.
    3. Smartphone market is controlled by ISPs. I think 90% of the users in US are all subscribers on postpaid plans. So unless those ISPs decide to get the Z1 then you won’t get it.

Also they would rather invest in markets where there’s a higher rate of them getting more buy rates than focus on a controlled market + being dominated by other brands.

Z2 Compact should be coming out soon! :)

  • xperiax10.awesome

    Joke of the day !!
Sony launching Xperia Z2 tomorrow here in Singapore and other markets & at the same time launched Xperia Z1 in U.S – let me know who will buy Z1 now (that too at 600+ dollars) !!!!!

  • Colby Leong

Are you effing kidding me? I just bought one of these of Ebay for way more because I couldn’t find an Unlocked version that worked on AT&T’s bands. Seriously, Sony? You wait until your next flagship is about to be released and THEN you do this? Fail. At least I can look forward to buying an Unlocked Z2 around 6 months from now when the Z3 is announced.

  • InspectorGadget80

Had mine since last OCT you can get it cheaper now where i got mine at gsmnation.com for 599$

  • InspectorGadget80

how is it the best when it will never get updated
