Sony will consider RAW capture in future “if there is popular demand”

Xperia RAW cameraSo how badly do you want to see RAW image capture on your Sony Xperia smartphone? Rickard from the Sony Mobile support forums confirmed what we’ve already known up until now, that it does not support RAW capture within Lollipop. This is despite Android 5.0 supporting this feature within the Camera2 API.

As you might expect, he goes on to say that the door isn’t shut on incorporating RAW in the future, but it depends on how much demand there is for it. So let’s hear you – if you’d like to see RAW image capture supported, voice your opinion below.

Why does Sony not support the Camera2 API within Lollipop firmware?

“Android 5.0 supports the new camera features via android.hardware.camera2, and Google defines three modes for the new camera features:

1. Legacy mode (no support RAW capture)
2. Limited mode (optional capability for RAW capture)
3. Full mode (optional capability for RAW capture)

Currently, Xperia supports Legacy mode in our Lollipop update which incorporate features and functionality in addition to our already renowned camera experience. As always, we monitoring our customer expectations and regarding supporting taking pictures in RAW format, we will consider this for the future if there is a popular demand.”

Thanks Uli!

  • how could they not know theres a demand? they are masters on photography and they don’t know?

  • Puneet

    And here I am Demanding!!!

  • Kiwison

They should’ve checked the XB comments section :D

  • foxy

RAW can not save the poor photo quality.

  • Useres need to go to their blogs and forums

  • Amel_Marie

    Yes!

  • eur3kasizm

GUYS!!! have you seen the LG G4 Raw camera ? So accurate and looks really real. Its so open that you can choose exposure time and blur manually. Come on Sony Do it!!!

  • Abdul Ghani

consider? they should solve their processing for jpeg and give us options like fine super fine and standard and manual controls and then raw

  • Mike Gonzalez

LG didnt answer to popular demand with the G4 manual camera mode, yet they added that feature so just in case anyone want to use it, it’s already there… Sony you just cant add features on demand, you have to see forward and take the first step before anyone else does

  • Kristo

Can someone explain what RAW photos are and what’s so good about them?

  • Valerius

RAW on smartphones. It’s for the same crowd that absolutely, positively cannot live without FLAC on 3-euro-earbuds while commuting on a crowded train.

  • XperiaBlog

Don’t worry, we know for a fact that Sony does monitor third-party blogs (including this one) … ;)

  • inspire

Nothing drastically will change with raw support. The fact remains that good pictures can’t be made with tiny mobile sensors (be it raw/jpg).
The funny part is that (IMO) many people who demand raw from camera in blogs (such as xb or gsma) aren’t even aware that they have to manually develop raw pictures (and they aren’t click-and-fb-upload-ready). Serious photographs don’t use mobile cameras for this purpose (and those who do, they know how to edit and enhance the jpg in PS/LR)

So, Sony I don’t demand Raw but a nice auto jpg engine.

  • eur3kasizm

At least user can decide settings manually.

  • yuskhayru

you mean they are watching our comments here?

  • eur3kasizm

I know right…Who hire those clowns? It’s logic.

  • Nino

Basically, more camera options in app.

  • eur3kasizm

Plot twist: timel is President Kazuo Hirai

  • Kristo

    So more options = RAW?

Can you be a bit more specific?

  • Shaktimaan

    It is known :p

  • inspire

“you can choose the blur manually”. Really?
It’s the aperture value (and lens quality) which decides the blur. There’s nothing like deciding the “blur manually”.
It’s like people have no idea how camera works but they want RAW support. Wonderful!

Btw, as for LG, they are official shots and which company doesn’t publish super Steller promotional camera shots?

  • Frode P. Bergsager

RAW is data from the sensor before the camera processes this data (white balance, contrast, colors, and JPG compression).
If you try to edit the JPG file you will have limited options before you see artefacts and banding. Editing/”developing” RAW give you more possibilities to enhance a picture, or to rescue a picture with incorrect settings. RAW doesn’t help for incorrect focusing, but incorrect color or exposure may be rescuable.

  • xperiaDROID

Well, there’s no need for popular demand, look at the LG G4 for example. But how about you improve your camera and image processing engine first? Don’t forget, a company that’s master in photography but can’t get their camera right on their phones is just embarrassing.

  • AnP

And yet it seems some times we have been talking to the wall… I wish they just not read people’s comments but take those comments seriously which are worth implementing.

  • Shaktimaan

They’re probably in a cave somewhere, testing lollipop on Xperia Z

  • eur3kasizm

it’s called manual focus which is more accurate and have variety of range of strength of focus. You should check the youtube video

  • Wolfmachien

Kind of like WAV for audio, uncompressed unprocessed data from the sensor. This isn;t really the perfect analogy but you can google it?

  • Quark Gluon

Please do not confuse RAW with manual settings.

  • Kristo

    Thanks! That explained a lot!

  • AnP

Their rivals/competitors use latest Sony image sensors while Sony itself uses older or outdated Sony sensors in Sony phones! I am just wondering how dumb, dumber and dumberer could it get…! Hirai really needs look into his plan of “One Sony” plans he made for the company.

  • Abdul Ghani

imx220 is a bigger and better sensor its not hardware issue its the image processing issue sony has that is why the images are poor

  • Frode P. Bergsager

As an owner of 7 cameras with RAW-support (one of these is only storing JPG) I would like RAW-support for my Z3C also.
Hopefully as generic DNG-files, as we don’t want another custom RAW-format.

  • Just read this:
Sony’s Hirai faces attack from activist ‘old boys’: sources http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/04/24/us-sony-restructuring-activists-idUSKBN0NF0SL20150424

My vote for the “old boys” :p

  • xperiaDROID

We have been asking for…new design…better camera and image processing engine etc. for a long time now. Did they listen? No.

I think those Sony dudes who are monitoring this website must be the ones who said “non Xperia Z phones won’t get Lollipop update”.

  • Quark Gluon

Right! I don’t think current Xperia cameras have enough dynamic range to make significant use of RAW output. Except some exposure bracketing involved, which is another story.

  • Sadman Khan

    Want

  • hansip

All i want is full manual mode with shutter speed and finer JPEG quality slider. No need for raw I’m not making money with my phone. I just want creative photo from my phone. In essence Nokia Lumia Camera App in my phone is enough.

  • sid3091

Exactly, Id rather we petition them to update the image processing in superior auto. Make it live up to its name, for once.

  • Abdul Ghani

dear xperia blog its sad after monitoring many websites they cant see xperia camera failed in every test from many reviewers and wont fix the software processing for jpeg fixing that would be much better and raw is a good thing but people aint got time for process themselves all the time

  • Tobias Hedlund

Sony´s phones in the top of the line range needs more manual controls. Just look at LG G4, it has everything and they aren´t even a camera manufacutre like Sony.

I would like to have manual shutter speed, JPEG compression settings (standard – super fine), RAW and so on.

Like many of us costumers have pointed out the Z series needs a better camera software for both image and layout, the hardware is good enough but the softwre is lagging.

I only Sony could really listen to us consumers we wouldn´t have this problem in the first place.

I would like to see Sony develop a Color spectrum sensor for it´s top of the range phones like LG did with the new G4.

  • Vuyo Ncube

It all makes sense! Kaz seems to hate the mobile division with a passion despite its potential profitability (with enough effort).

  • Ritwij

If that is true, SONY WE WANT FULL MANUAL CONTROLS AS WELL!

  • Dean Weaver

If this will avoid the ‘over processed look’ – I’m in…

  • Vuyo Ncube

If there’s no demand, create it. RAW support for all Lollipop Xperias!

  • I didn’t care about RAW capture , but IMPROVE THE CAMERA SOFTWARE lah

  • fyzz08

Sony please add RAW support for all Z Series.

  • Victor Rusu

Just so you know, the camera2 api not only allows RAW capture, it allows third party apps to use different processing algorithms. While FLAC is pretty much useless unless you’ve got €150+ headphones, RAW really does bring lots of benefits on any camera. There have been comparisons made on the Nexus 5, which has an 8 MP 1/3 sensor and RAW really did bring out a lot of details compared to JPG. If you wouldn’t use it it doesn’t mean it’s pointless.

  • Itsarapong Intoum

Yes Definitely, every Sony Xperia users including me will welcome that feature.

In future, if there is any update like that it will be widely appreciated.

I give my Vote towards including that feature in Sony Xperia Z1 (C6902)

  • smileman

Of course there is a demand for RAW on Sony phones.

There is also a demand for Sony to following Nikon et al and put an end to their practice of compressing RAW images with their FE mount cameras (eg, Sony A7II).

Sony is completely out to lunch on RAW.

  • Yash Keshan

Adding raw to the amazing hardware that sony has on its flagship phones will be a very important point for them when it comes to sales… And sony phones are great in photography, adding the raw capability will be something hardly any other manufacturers implemented.. Well i as a mobile photographer would love to have this on my Z2… Lets all ask sony for it!!

  • Niels d. G.

The majority people wanting RAW support want it because they think that RAW images are “higher quality photos without bad post-processing”, but in reality a RAW image from a cameraphone is a horribly noisy picture that require professional skill to make into something that you can actually show to people.

  • kido

Full manual control like slow shutter speed up to 30s at full resolution or at least 8mp, iso control which is already present in manual mode, but in intervals of 50 instead of 100. dual flash or much better zenon flash for superior low light photos, improved camera software, and then raw capture for boasting rights ;) sony will regain top camera spot agai, i guarantee… Heads up sony you can do this :)

But nowadays the smartphone is eating compact camera’s market share, Sony can’t avoid it, Sony must adjust to the reality of today that the devices like music player and compact camera will be replaced by Smartphone

If Sony still do nothing they will lose so much in mobile market because manufacturer like Apple, Samsung, LG or even Xiaomi they’re work seriously hard with smartphone camera, these companies didn’t sell compact camera and they no need to worry about it

  • Hieu Nguyen

  • Maurice Phoenix

Well, Including Full Mode Wont Be A Pain In Sony Ass Right? Id Like To See The Option. It Can Be Good

  • Mark Finney

Absolutely! I’d use it for perhaps half the shots I take. Ones with difficult lighting or where I’m after the best possible quality. I shoot raw on my DSLR 100% of the time, I have the tools and knowledge how to make optimal conversions from raw and I’ve seen the benefits of raw in better point and shoot cameras. So, why not? All we’ve got to lose is jpeg artifacts!

  • Robert Llobrera Jr.

    Demand “great”.

  • Maxx Tan

    Yes please!

  • Kaostheory

It’s the beginning of allowing the post processing of choice. There will be more 3rd party apps if there’s more raw images.

  • malinalaza

I don’t care for manual mod, if i can’t change the aperture, but RAW … Yes, please, thank you! After that, we need a software that will recognize the Xperia RAW files. Without a software, there is no use of RAW.

  • Timel
  • Simos Katsiaris

    where i vote?

  • AbhiD

Yes Sony! We need RAW in phones and also bring better manual controls, options for selecting jpeg quality, shutter speed etc.

“If you want the best camera quality, choose Alpha or Cyber-shot. Xperia doesn’t have it until we research more for our camera” – Sony

  • Solaire of Astora

They use sh*tty 11+7 bit RAW on their cameras. Would be really lame if their phone lineup supported proper 14 bit or even 16 bit uncompressed.

  • Amir

Yes, i want raw to be supported

  • jobeus

+1 for supporting full mode w/ RAW!

  • Rico Chandra

We need RAW! And super manual mode!

  • not for me it’s gone for me when they leave omnibalance and dare i say it move back to arc the z3+ or z4 whatever looks like the ultimate xperia z phone it has the design of the z2 with the functionality of z3 only wish it had the frame of the z ultra

  • Solaire of Astora

Bullsh*t. What’s so hard in moving sliders in Lightroom? And don’t forget 3rd party apps’ access to RAW. If you can’t handle RAW, they will. But no, we have only the sh*tty Sony algorithm that ruins the image and 3rd apps can only add on top of that.

  • Kaostheory

Actually I think the problem is mostly with the lens.

  • Solaire of Astora

What if something interesting happens and you don’t have your DSLR around or what if 90% of your family shots were done on a phone and you wanna make an album (physical / printed)? Obviously you won’t use a phone for fine art, but it’s the only camera always around. Why not bring out the best of those pictures?

  • Zezadas Moreira

    YYYEEYYY!! RAW photos!!!

  • hocestquisumus

And that’s the point. With those tiny, toylike optics, the software processing is what makes phone photos ‘good’. RAW brings nothing to the table in that case. It’s for feeling self important.

  • Solaire of Astora

    > they know how to edit and enhance the jpg in PS/LR
LMFAO, you can’t enhance a compressed POS JPEG. The moment you change something is the moment the image will look even more fcked up. You can do way more with RAW.

  • Solaire of Astora

I’m smarter than the processor. I can make those images look better, than the jpgs the phone produces.

  • Steve12321

Actually, some of us understand that a RAW image is not a complete image. But we know that the Z series’ sensor is great, but Sony’s postprocessing keeps it down. Having direct access to the sensor means we can use other software postprocessing, which can be enhanced and deliver an ultimately better image than the default. And more importantly, this can be more customizable: for a quick Facebook image, Sony’s PP is enough, but you may want something more natural, or you may want to join the subpixels on a dark image to get a less noisy (say) 2MP image from your 20MP sensor. It’s about the possibilities.

  • Sola Hoi

  • Raj Singh

Considering the fact that they have the Sony World Photography Awards (worldphoto.org), they should definitely consider it for their higher end models.

Raw is a very specialized format that only pros can take full advantage of. I would rather have them work into perfecting the superior auto algorithms.

  • joe

  • jack

bring RX100 team and re design the JPG algorithm. no one needs raw from such a tiny lens.

  • Barend Stapelberg

Please please please please enable this feature. It’s really the ONLY reason I wanted Lollipop.

  • Shanky Mantri

Definitely update with Full mode on old Xperia Z models too but firstly Please hear the public demand … ‘We want a new proper camera algorithm camera software….inshort redesign the camera software totally’ otherwise you are out of the game very soon….Fed up with this despite having a 13mpx cam …I Think cheaper phones wid sony sensor can take betta photos…Rest i like sony updating deir own software like album walkman n movies regularly…Respect that…Sony Please hear this public demand …i am sure evrybody has that point first on the priority list…

  • inspire

You surely can do that very well with jpg (provided the image size is not small, and with 21mp it’s quite enough). Sure you can do more with raw but jpg editing is certainly not “LFMAO”

(I do capture both jpg and raw on alpha 6000, and edit both in PS. The jpgs don’t fuck up at all, and I am able to sell them stock. So if one doesn’t know how to play then one should learn rather than fcking up)

  • bryan somonce

JPEG is supposed to only store what it is showing, RAW is meant to be edited. Why not give the option to users? Play with Lumia 1020 DNGs, they’re better than any smartphone JPEG.

  • Joachim Nilsson

Simple, we want powerful 3rd party camera apps. Sony seems incapable of giving us the SW capabilities of its competitors, so they should open the door for others to show the awesomeness of the Sony HW!

Seriously, I don’t see why we have to petition for it, what are Sony afraid of, except losing face?

  • BSEB

Warning about RAW/DNG photos by a professional photographer write-up when shooting with LG G4: “The trade off? DNG files are MUCH larger in size, sometimes coming in 2x or 3x as large as their JPEG cousins on the G4. If you are constantly backing your images up to the cloud (Dropbox, Box, Google Drive), this isn’t an issue, but if you aren’t…you might find yourself running out of room on your phone sooner than you thought…even with expandable storage.” Either you bring lots of Micro SD cards or have a unlimited data plan in a good reception area, else this function is just a good to have like in most cameras.

  • malinalaza

Guys, if you have RAW, why do you need better JPEG algorithm? The point of RAW is to apply your own algorithm, isn’t it?

  • ZXcorr

We need a better camera sofware first and foremost. RAW mode appeals to fewer people compared to a better Auto mode. And front cameras are very important too, this is the decade of selfies after all.

Why everyone here seems to “force” sony to get RAW support?
guys do you ever took pics with dslr on RAW format?
or its just “oooh its something new, it must be cool, i need it even if i don’t know what it is”

RAW format usually used by person who would like to edit the photos manually with editing software. (e.g photoshop). it took pictures straight from the camera sensor without any software processing. (CMIIW)
IMO that’s not needed since most of smartphone “photographer” just take a picture and then use a filter on it. and the size are bigger too.

IMO smartphone camera’s just for daily photography, if someone want to get serious, better buy the DSLR camera.

  • japolis

do you read all comments aswell?

  • Vakuum

You don’t think the low-light performance is shoddy because of the small sensor size then?

Seriously though… Even more professional oriented gear such as full-frame DSLRs can have a hard time with low-light performance. What do you expect from a tiny camera sensor in a phone?

  • Maxx Tan

yes i do, and i dont want to carry a huge form factor.

  • InF3rN0

I would love RAW support and manual shutter speed. FTW

  • Melfes Wired

but, even if Xperia does support RAW, do you really believe that you will get the same pic quality like a alpha or a cyber-shot?

  • Melfes Wired

i’m sad to tell you that the EVIL market is growing

  • Melfes Wired

actually, the reason, why the DNG files seems so, is that the RAW file usually contains a wider dynamic range than most display, if the dynamic range gets compressed, then you see the result like this

  • Great Dude

For me (I am not talking about others) It is either they made good post photo processes or they let us use some app to change the RAW pictures to high quality.

  • Great Dude

Maybe it cost them time and effort, so if there is no popular demand then there wouldn’t be that benefit for them to do that.

  • Great Dude

Especially if it will go to the software post processes

  • Just Saying

well, i’d rather have the better photo processing, since i dont want to edit all photos from smartphone.

  • gamer324

Sony is Sony, the Z flagship series, the playstation, their industry leading benchmark lcd Bravia tvs, amazing camera sensors from tiny mobile cameras through DSLRs and SLRs all the way upto professional 4k and slow-mo shooting equipment, amazing audio and display technologies individually and as part of JDi and JOLED are all proof of a corporation truly dedicated to quality and innovation first, and everything else second. Anyone who argues this really just doesn’t know much about Sony at all. For anyone who demands quality, Sony is always the name that pops up most often.
If Sony were a company who had ‘stopped trying to recreate its Glory days as an innovator’; as WSJ put it, these devices would never have been greenlit.

The real point of that article as with most of theverge’s sensationalist articles is to drive click-throughs there’s very little substance to the article and what substance there is, is highly opinionated and quiye frankly out of touch with the business realities of the Consumer Electronics industry.

But if you read what he actually has to say about JPEG vs. RAW…he’s definitely in favor of RAW. It’s not going to be Facebook-ready, obviously, but the JPEG image came from the RAW image in the first place, so if you’re willing to spend the time and effort, you can adjust the exposure and contrast and saturation and everything else yourself to get something like that JPEG but with more texture detail.

RAW format is wanted for use with third party camera apps, Mr Know-It-All-Know-Nothing. You obviously havent followed Android development for the last year or so.

  • Just Saying

yeah, i knew that camera fv-5 has that ability.others coming soon
so what’s your point? did it take pictures better that usual?
or you have to edit that too to make it better? please elaborate.
no need to be rude :)

Based on your comments you probably don’t need or really want RAW files and you don’t understand what it is for.
People who do want a greater latitude to work with the images rather than accept the fixed final output that the jpegs give. No those adjustments you do in your little apps are but trivial little edits. We’re talking about highlight, exposure recovery. Can you get all those in your JPEGS?

  • Richie

    Need RAW capture

    Seriously more sure
I have use Nokia n8 excellent in low light even it is only 12mp and old phone @ last xperia can’t even compare with Samsung or lg
Both of them don’t have DSLRs but they are better than xperia

  • ZoubIWah

raw and full control would be nice – but that wouldnt solve the problem of the post processing, if you have to edit pics in lightroom to get an average-camera result (instead of the slightly under average result we get in auto and even manual mode)

i believe thats why they didnt put the raw mode, it doesn’t really give a huge boost in quality even after you process it manually.

if anything they should fix their shitty post processing. even their pro compact camera’s post processing isnt great at all (ie bionz). They need to hire actual engineers that know their stuff. Seems everyone else has them.

  • Ade

I really don’t care much for RAW. i just want their post-processing to not look like crap!

  • Marcel de Boer

    RAW yes

  • Akbert

    I’m interested is it enough?

  • André Faria

It’s better that they do something to their software…
    This is a shame:
    Same sensor, no excuses.
