Xperia Z3 Plus supports many manual camera settings; RAW still missing though

Xperia Z3+ Camera Manual SettingsMany of us were disappointed when we learned that Sony Mobile did not support manual camera settings through the Camera2 API within Android 5.0 Lollipop. However, it looks as if Sony is listening to everyone’s demands of wanting greater manual control within their Sony Xperia devices.

A hands-on video from our friends at Btekt confirms that the upcoming Xperia Z3+ will indeed support most manual settings including focus, white balance, ISO and shutter speed.

The only one still missing, and perhaps the biggest, is RAW support. However, there is a good chance that Sony may open this up in due course. We would hope that these manual settings will open up to all of those on Lollipop over time – not just for those that own the Xperia Z3+.

Thanks Amimanot!

  • Abdullah Mohamed

There is hope .. Please sony DO IT

  • Abdul Ghani

where are the professional mobile camera people who think they can shoot dslr quality shots from a mobile

  • Aaron

Disappointed that lollipop doesn’t have RAW? I don’t remember Samsung nor LG given their older phones RAW either!

  • SkyS1gn

I hope that means Z3 get this in 5.1.1. or something!

  • Vuyo Ncube

Please add RAW support before other big name brands do! HTC did it already.

  • Nodar Sixarulidze
  • Nodar Sixarulidze
  • Mohamed adel ali

so this could come to z1 or not

  • Itsarapong Intoum

I think I don’t really care of RAW shot. It’s better to have a Camera UI like LG which is really easy to use. The adjustable shutter speed like LG is very much appreciated.

  • DBS

I welcome the news of the addition of shutter speed and focus manual controls. And I expect to see those in the other Z3 devices. Raw is nice to have but these controls are more important to have first. Because shooting RAW without these is pretty pointless. One thing at a time, apparently.

I will reconsider updating to Lollipop after these controls are released for the other Z3 phones (namely my ZZ3Compact).

  • DBS

Nokia was the first to do it. Then Android OEMs like HTC did. Sony missed the boat again. But it’s more important to first overhaul the manual settings so that later you can actually benefit from RAW support.

  • DBS

You can. As Nokia proved back then with the 808 and the 1020. Sony has a long tradition in cameras. They should be stepping up their game. Then They could boast about that that too

  • Meysam Khanbabaie

    Just Sony ;)

  • Snorky112

I dont understand how people can say that z3 has shitty camera

  • Itsarapong Intoum

I don’t think Z3 has shitty camera. It just has shitty auto mode :v

  • Afzal Zainal Rddz

Manual focus and shutter control… Ok iam sold….

    Nice

  • Faisal Armand

No one in the right mind will say Z3 has a total shit camera.

  • Itsarapong Intoum

So which phone do you think it have a good camera then ?

If it’s lumia 1020, pureview 808, Lumix CM1 then I can agree. Otherwise not.

  • Itsarapong Intoum

The panasonic lumix CM1 is great too. If SONY make a bulky camera on xperia I will definitely get it. Some people don’t like bulky though.

  • Why do people wants RAW support on a phone? I don’t get it. I have it on my OnePlus and never use RAW ever. On my 5D mk1 yes but phone no.

  • DBS

Yeah I’m one of those. I don’t like bulky devices but I can like with them. After all, I always carry either a Nokia 808 or a Nokia 1020 with me. So my Z3C isn’t my main shooter (it’s my main phone though). But even when I use it to take photos, I actually miss the vast manual controls because I’m so used to them on Nokia.

The Lumix is a pretty nice concept and I would probably also consider buying one if either Nokia or Sony did one (Panasonic…not so much. Specially at those prices).

  • Faisal Armand

I never say that Xperia cameras with 20.7MP sensor are bad, I have analysis and my own work to prove it.

All smartphone cameras today are very good. But when it comes to the best it really depends on the user

If you are a point & shooter, the best option is Galaxy S6 and iphone 6+

If you like to take full advantage of your camera, you’d better go with lumias and xperias

  • Dakota

You spent $500 (that’s the price on Amazon from what I just checked) on a phone to just use it as a camera? You could’ve just bought a camera I think

  • Random Dude

This function NEEDS to be updated on the existing Z3 =.=

  • Random Dude

No doubt the Z3 doesn’t have THE BEST camera. Though it isn’t that bad to be considered ‘shitty’.

TBH I still think the only thing pulling Xperia’s cameras down are the G Lens Sony uses. Dosn’t seem to live up to its name.

Extremely soft in the corners, you could probably argue that it’s common in ultra wide angle lenses, ok. But the center isn’t as sharp either as compared to other brands that uses Sony’s sensor..

  • Ade

I really hope we get that on the Z3.

  • DBS

Not “a phone”. A Nokia. Pretty big difference to me.
But yes. I did buy both to use just as a camera (I bought the 1020 first and then, because of the storage limitations and some crap Microsoft did in the Cyan update, I bought the 808.)

I didn’t buy a camera because no digital compact camera can beat the Nokia 808/1020. I would need a good DSLR for that. And the reason I don’t buy a DSLR is because you can’t fit a good Canon, Sony or Nikon in your pocket ;)

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

They’re slowly learning. Hopefully older Z models get an update for these controls

  • Itsarapong Intoum

I agree. I wonder if I have a chance to see SONY put carl zeiss lens on xperia just like they put on RX100 :v

  • Itsarapong Intoum

    Hey do you forgot rx100 m2 – m3 ? I have m2 and it kill 808/1020 easily.

  • DBS

It’s also bulky and uncomfortable to use ;) I’m not a fan of those Cyber-shot camerad from Sony. I think the time they waste on them would be better spent trying to cram that tech into their Xperia phones.
Still, I’ve tried the 808 and 1020 against some compact digital cameras and the 41mp sensor does make a big difference. Specially when shooting RAW on the 1020. Those 16mp and 20mp compacts have no way around the less information their sensors captur. Some, of cocourse, resource to oversampling several pictures.

Nah. No digital compact camera has convinced me so far. And If I want bulky or uncomfortable devices, I’ll just actually buy a DSLR. Discomfort for discomfort, that last one brings in the artillery :P

  • Itsarapong Intoum

Oh well if SONY put RX100 quality on XPERIA it would be a good news to XPERIA’s fan.

But that could be only a day-dreaming :v

  • DBS

It would be progress. I’m pretty sure Sony could pull it off of they put their minds to it ;)

  • Chaturanaga Manchanayake

    Where’s Timel? lol

  • Utsav Shah

Why didn’t sony implement this in the Z3 lollipop update?
They haven’t changed a single thing on the camera hardware side.
Come on Sony! People have been dying to see more controls over the camera hardware.

This is frustrating as there is still no Root for lollipop. So even if this is ported, I won’t be able to use.

  • Winter Soldier

what about Xperia Z2? I think they will give these features to z2 upcoming update…

hello utsav! Nice seeing you here.
Search for PRFcreator to make your own pre rooted firmware. I’m using rooted lollipop on my Z1.

  • Timel

    Unbelievable

  • Timel

    Hi I’m here ^^

  • Timel

    Spot on!!!

New camera UI and improve auto mode

  • Timel

    Yeah fake as shit

  • Timel

    This is smartphone Ok?
People want great auto mode and you must admit it! Sony flagship phones always have had the shittiest auto mode.

  • Matt

You are sure an odd one.
Megapixel is not the amount of information you get from a camera, instead is the size ofor the sensor. And you won’t even try rx100 because you’re not a fan of cyber shot cameras. Sorry what?

No multipurpose device like phones can beat single purpose device like camera (unless is a really crap camera).

So instead of buying rx100 with optical zoom and really nice zeiss glass you blow your money on one bulky phone with a dead ecosystem and other bulky phone with extremely slow camera performance. And you bring both of them with you including the z3 compact?

I’m sorry mate the logic is mind bogglingly flawed here. my guess is either you’re not trying to look at the camera market at all or don’t understand camera at all or just doesn’t bother to change device.. . .

  • Timel

Why people said Sony Z3 has a shitty camera?

    This is smartphone Ok?
People want a great auto mode but you must admit it! Sony flagship phones have always had the shittiest auto mode.

  • Utsav Shah

Hey bro. nice to see you man.
There are already prerooted lollipop firmwares on xda. But I am afraid I will loose region specific FW. It’s cool atm as I get apps and Rom updates pretty quickly.

  • Prateek Kumar

The cool thing about PRFcreator is you can download your region specific ftf via xperifirm, input that ftf in PRFcreator and it’ll make a prerooted firmware for your region.

    …..

  • Naail Zahid

Probably going to keep it exclusive to Z3+ just so that there would be a reason to consider upgrading. #sonylogic

  • Naail Zahid

Sony’s G lenses are the Best non-Zeiss lenses I have ever used (obviously referring to actual cameras).
That said, it’s definitely not the G lens that is killing xperia cameras, nor the sensor. It’s the damn software.
Just ask Oppo, HTC and Apple who are using sony’s sensors…

  • Naail Zahid

I never thought I’d ever agree with this troll, but he is 100% correct. Average phone user wants a quick and easy auto mode, and sony has the worst. Even worse than random chinese vendors!
Xiaomi, Oppo, Gionee and Meizu wipe the floor with sony’s own hardware….

  • Naail Zahid

    ? ??

    Nokia proved what?
Yes they had the best damn mobile software that is still unbeaten, but it was nowhere near DSLR quality…
But I will admit that Sony has really dropped the ball with their Xperia generation. Remember the Ericsson era of sony mobile cameras?

  • Naail Zahid

Sony won’t do one like this because they have an alternative – the QX series of cameras that attach to mobile phones.

  • Timel

Yup you’re right but shitty auto mode is a big deal for many people , I don’t think end users want to use manual mode on the smartphone, they love to use auto mode and they found that Z3 has the worst auto mode, Sony must improve their Superior auto mode on Xperia flagship phones but if Sony still do nothing about it they will lose their customers more than this.

  • Brick

Raw is literally useless for 99% of users. Who the hell wants let alone knows how to post process raw shots except professional photographers? And you need expensive software as well to process raw files, such as adobe lightroom. This is enough for third party camera apps to access the full hardware so I’m OK with this. Other than that I seriously hope Sony will port this to the regular Z3 with upcoming software updates.

  • marcy_ff2

he is not a troll. He is just a paid reviewer. He as a pretty good job actually, populate websites with anti-propaganda against his manufactures competition. The only thing is it works, people always comment on his posts because it is easier to disagree with someone than to ignore.

  • Abdul Ghani

they did put rx100 quality in qx100

  • marcy_ff2

actually no, sony brought individual features from the z2 all the way back to the original z and from z3 all the way back to z1. so I can imagine this being ported back to.

  • Timel

How about the Ericsson era of sony mobile cameras? I really don’t know.

  • Timel

If put RAW mode seems to hard for sony then they should fix so called superior (in real time the worst) auto mode

  • Itsarapong Intoum

Well, I don’t know what happen to SONY MOBILE’s programmer. Maybe they don’t put enough effort or maybe they have poor skill.

Secondly maybe SONY don’t have a budget to hire qualified programmer. (Well I just joking)

  • Naail Zahid

Notice how I wrote “probably”? Sony logic hashtag added for the lulz.
There’s no guarantee unless sony actually officially states that they will give those features to any other model.

Where’s the PS4 remote play “all the way back to the original Z and from Z3 all the way back to z1”?

  • -Simone-

Go here all.Write to put Camera 2Api On Z3 and Z2 series.

    http://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Software-Updates/Camera2-API/td-p/974742

  • Jachym Kokesh Lukes

Yes. The autoawesome brings the camera down to the level of cheapest chinese phones, when the lighting conditions get imperfect. People, do not use it.

  • jag

    It is slowly getting there.

They got the remote play working well in the Z3 series, right? I remember they promised that since the first xperia Z. But atleast they managed to keep their promise.

For the sound dept, I think sony got the best producing sound (in headphones because the speaker is horrible) among others. Hi-Res baby!

The camera is ok but they need to step that department up. I wish they will also have a beta for the camera app of xperia. The auto mode uses too much ISO and exposure compensation that’s why it is so grainy. The white balance is also crazy in superior auto mode. So I hope they fix that! It has been 2 years already since they destroyed the camera of sony phones. Sony Ericsson days had the greatest camera IMHO.

The screen is great like their bravias. Not too vibrant and oversaturated. Maybe others want the 2K screen so I think it would be better if they provided options. I thought they got 2K screens? Maybe that’s for US market, I guess.

  • Timel

    This is my dream LOL
If I was Sony, I will release 3 flagship phones per year, one is Cyber-shot phone, another one is Walkman phone and the last one is Xperia phone (this phone is the combination between Cyber-shot phone + Walkman phone + some PlayStation features)

Cyber-shot phone and Walkman phone will launch in Q1 while the Xperia phone will launch in Q3-Q4.

  • jag

Haha yep! Like the SE days, right? Good old days

  • How does that shutter thing work?
I dont own or ever used the LG phones except once for comparing cameras in my Z1 against G2

  • Jachym Kokesh Lukes

    You’re a hobbyist, haha

  • Those photos were taken at a completely different time of the day though (looking at the shadows)…

I don’t know what you’re comparing here: colours are different because of this, and the resolution doesn’t show any difference in details either

  • In my opinion, it does show that the camera isn’t at fault for poor shots, it’s mostly the photographer itself. Seriously, people should stop complaining about the hardware and software and start becoming better photographers themselves!

EDIT: Here, let me help those of you with a video I did: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wcjIw65uFMs

  • Abdul Ghani

really that a day shot not night on low light have u really seen ur pictures in pc or laptop screens i compare them with lumia 1520 and there is a big difference

  • Abdul Ghani

thank got i bought qx30 now my shots are awesome no matter what light conditions it is

  • DBS

The larger the size the more information you gather. Which is ultimately a benefit for post-processing ;)
Why is the rx100 m3 any different from the others? I’m not a fan of the Cyber-shots I tried, why should I keep giving them a try? Do you happen to try something, don’t like it, but keep trying it just in the hope that you’ll like it? I don’t think so ;)

Both the 808 and the 1020 have Zeiss lenses. Just FYI.
And yes, instead of buying a crappy Compact camera I rather use one of those Nokia’s. By the way, I did I carry one of them. I don’t go around with 3 phones. Otherwise I’d also carry the 930 I use to play Xbox Games.

The logic is very simple: I haven’t found a Compact digital camera that is good enough and pocket-able enough to justify replacing the 808/1020. I don’t want to carry around a big DSLR. Ergo, I’ll keep those two until the moment comes when either someone releases a really good compact digital camera with all the bells and whistles and a good compact design or a new and better camera phone is released.

  • hmmm

well,I’m not going to buy a Sony phone, until they will unlock the RAW feature.this is so stupid from Sony….why????????can’t belive you do this to us Sony…shame on you!

  • Timel

Many costumers have bad user experience with Sony QX cameras, That why they’re flop.

  • DBS

Except they’ve even sort of abandoned those. Try to get a cover for the Z3 series to attach the lens to like you had with the Z1. You won’t find it. You can use the built in grips but they’re far from ideal.
I haven’t extensively used any of the QX lenses but I haven’t heard many praises to them either to be honest.

  • DBS

    I’m not sure I understand your question…

  • Abdul Ghani

take one shot with qx and see the quality then ull vomit on all current xperia camera

  • DBS

I don’t doubt that. The one with Zeiss lenses (QX100 I think?) should blow the lenses on the phone away. But again…all the other usability problems remain. As I said though, I haven’t extensively used them. I tried the QX10 (the one with G lenses) and wasn’t blown away by it as I expected. But, then again, lack of manual controls on the software side of things.

  • Akand

You people are too complicated. You want best auto mode to shoot with your smartphone. And also cry for manual controls. Whichever direction the tide flows, you people also flow to that direction. If auto mode is so important for you, then why cry for all manual controls?? When Xperia can take best photos on manual mode, you say you don’t have time to shoot manually.

  • Oh!

Not many app can support RAW also.
My only disappointment for Z3 + is that there is no OIS or new camera sensor.

  • Oh!

Agree with you. I would rather have the option to shoot 1:1 (For Instagram)
Sony should also improve the responsiveness of their camera software and also their compression.

  • hmmm

Everry other brand has Raw,only sony does not….

  • roeshak

Camera2API is an android lollipop feature which Sony didn’t implement. It’s not something they can reserve for only newer models. That would be an abuse of android which I don’t think Google will like very much. They may however, when they eventually update their stock camera app to support more extensive manual controls reserve that for newer devices. The only device they could possibly not do this for is the originally Z because of its age!

  • Panji Aditya

don’t forget how gigantic those RAW files are.

seriously, the only problem here is the “superior” auto mode.

  • Abdul Ghani

instead showing these useless tutorials u should just buy a real camera or QX

  • Oh!

I am fine with not having RAW. I don’t think there is any software from Android that can edit RAW files yet.

The Sony Album can’t view RAW file shot from DSLR too.

    What they should improve on:
    1. New camera sensor (Better low light, 16 megapixel or more)
    2. New lens (Larger aperture?)
    3. Better Auto Mode (When you just have to get a quick snapshot)
    4. More aspect ratio for camera? (Or frame lines for square)
    5. Manual focus for super close subject. (Sometime their camera got problem focusing super close subject with Auto Focus)

  • Naail Zahid

    Abandoned…?
Do you know they just released an interchangeable lens variant and a 60x zoom variant right?
And they released multiple updates to their apps and cameras themselves?
And with the recent updates their usefulness has doubled since the connection is super fast?
And they have released a new travelling case, selfie grip, tablet attachment, and a few other accessories for them?
I have 3 different models of the QX series and I can say they have been supported like heck from sony’s camera division.

  • Naail Zahid

hey timel, please stop replying to my comments. No one takes you seriously.

And qx series is no flop since they have sold large quantity of them in asia and the middle east. Troll harder.

  • Matt

it is not the statement whether you like something or not that bothers me. but the statement that there isnt any good enough, there is many better but you wont find any if youre not looking of it. so its useless to bicker on mobile space for a better camera.as much as quality concerns phones with cameras are quite great. but it wont ever beat an item that created only to take pictures. not to do internet browsing AND taking pictures.

yes the larger the sensor will increase amount of information you accept , oversampling is just one of those run of a mill technique to avoid noise that inevitably comes on such a high megapixel count on a tiny sensor. Yes zeiss make the tiny lens for nokias, many companies do this , for example big company like Ferrari also make keychains aside of cars.

Its all boils down to your needs really , it downs to me that you might be more of casual photographer , so might be 808 is a great item to have. and you dont need a DSLR to have an DSLR like quality. even if you have DSLR , and using it with kit lens, you might better off buying RX100 or even any mirrorless for more versatile and fast snapping experience .

  • Naail Zahid

    ?_??

  • Abdul Ghani

none of ur tutorial makes sense i have qx30 in manual mode no settings are like xperia they suck balls plus all ur shots are in day light one night but those high leds wont judge if u take a group picture in low light and night xperia will produce horrible compression with grain pictures

Actually only Xperia owners that want the full mannual controls on the smartphone LOL

Owners of the great phones such as iPhone 6, Galaxy S6 series they don’t care much about Manual mode, Manual mode on the smartphone is nonsense for them.

Unlike Xperia owners, they know that all Xperia phones always have bad auto mode so there’s only manual mode that they can play with, Xperia owners disappointed with auto mode that why they ask for full mannual controls.

  • LOL seriously :-D
a one hour difference or maybe two hours but who cares :-P
Can’t you see the way contrast of both the images plus how the sharpness makes the whole image punch out loud?
Plus the G2 owner who is a friend of mine agreed after this that Xperia takes true to life photos! G2 was a total wash-out of what was in front of us.. . If you’re still confused about the DETAILS, I can mail you both the originals and you can see what is what :-P

Look what Samsung did with their S6 edge’s camera, look what Apple did with iPhone 6’s camera. people love them.

Have u ever used a real camera or even a digital camera it has more and better options than current xperia phones have I still don’t understand that how u and ur type of people claim that phone camera is for photography lol thats why u are just a joke

  • Abdul Ghani

I cannot believe guys like u who think 808 beats a camera which btw makes u a fanboy faggot but still camera digital semi dslr or a dslr cannot be beaten buy mobile phones thats the fact true photographers know that

  • jag

I don’t think anyone will use the RAW function. It’s too much adjustments to fiddle with before you can make your desired output. But it is a nice addition and good for Pros out there.

These are two different lighting conditions. The first is with a high, midday sun, which gives a flat look and dull colors. The second is with a low, setting sun, which gives a more defined look and punchy colors. Because of that, the first CAN’T look good, and the second CAN’T look bad.
If you want to make a comparison, you MUST make it under same lighting conditions. Otherwise, it doesn’t make sense.

  • malinalaza

So, what shutter speed and what ISO will you dial in if you want to take a photo of your girlfriend sitting on the late afternoon sun, while you are in a deep shade?

  • Brick

From what I can tell, the Z3 has the third best camera in daylight and the second best camera in low light.
    1. Samsung GS6/Note4
    2. iPhone 6
    3. Z3

Lumia 1020 is still the best but extremely outdated software-wise and not worth it.

  • Have a look at my photography album “Best of”: https://flic.kr/s/aHsjZsQUj4

Now take a look at the camera that I took each photo with. Do you see how only a handful are taken with my phone? To clarify, I’m not just a phone photographer. I’m a photographer who realizes that others want to use their phones for photography, and I like to help those people. You know what… I don’t even know why I bother explaining myself. You can’t listen to reason anyway.

  • Naail Zahid

Lol take a chill pill dude. Maybe go get a lemonade and maybe stop being so emotional over a comment on the interwebs…

  • Abdul Ghani

I thought that flikr pictures were from xperia but they are from nikon so ur guide still is useless and do understand photography from phone is useless so stop teaching useless stuff anyone will know how to adjust iso and exposure and scene thats what Xperia offers but phone users just like to shoot auto mode which is shit on Xperia because they don’t Want to miss the moment for manual get a camera like u have nikon and I have qx30/10 which is portable and awesome

  • mukul verma

thats what i’m saying, its a smartphone not dslr. DSLR have a capacity to capture clearly, even alpha series of sony is great & pics of apple & samsung doest stand near it.

s6 camera is imx 240, & sony’s imx 220, imx 240 ismuch improved & it 192 focal points to capture.

even professional photographer doesnt use auto mode either in smartphone or DSLR.

  • hmmm

    Then let us have it!

  • jag

Sure! I’ll tell sony about it. Jk. Lol

  • DBS

You let me know when you’ve finished throwing your feces.

  • Z3 COMPACT

  • Damo Conti

Let the sony dslr s/w dudes fix the phone camera s/w then we’d be set snd put the new sensor 24mp ois I think

  • marcy_ff2

such words, much rage wow. I don’t even get what you tried to say, but if you notice the trail of our conversation you will notice I used the words you used on me before. If that came as being emotional I have some bad news for you.

  • Atanas Vangelov

@z3compact:disqus you dude, just showed how dumb you are, you dont need any manual settings

  • Z3 COMPACT
