by XB on 30th September 2015

in Imaging, Xperia Z5 series

Xperia_Z5_1The Sony Xperia Z5’s camera has been reviewed by experts DxOMark and has gone straight to the top of the rankings. The Xperia Z5 delivered a score of 87 points, edging the Samsung S6 Edge into second place. DxO declared the phone to have the best photo score amongst all devices ever tested.

Of note was the camera’s super-fast autofocus, good exposure, pleasant white balance and preservation of details in low-light. In terms of video, DxOMark remarked on impressive stabilisation using SteadyShot with Intelligent Active mode with good autofocus.

hell yeah, In your face Samsung

  • Chaturanaga Manchanayake

    Whoa this is exciting news.

  • Aurélien Coquart

    Yeah ! #SwitchtoSony

  • BarelyBlurred

Impressive! Maybe Sony finally got their camera software in good shape!

  • Rohit Patil

Cmon Timel u can still bark…..people please ignore him now :-P
Don’t bother about the people whose thoughts you don’t have respect for! ;-)

    Hail Sony…..!!

  • Alvin

Now who says sony can’t make a cameraphone??? LOL AT THEM

  • Alvin

    No timel…. But DBS

  • Alvin

But I still a bit doubting this though…. Because my z3 captures better pictures in low light, and video is better in every aspects than s6 edge… But overall, I think even though s6 is better than z3 in camera, they should rate it at a similar or close scores.

I’m not just typing bulls*** here.. I have much evidence here in my z3 and s6 edge beside me

  • Chaturanaga Manchanayake

But where’s the article? I can’t seem to find it.,

  • Alvin

It will be up in a few moments i think..

  • Chaturanaga Manchanayake

Ah cool. I really wanna see how it did :D

  • DBS

Yup. I’m just taking results from DxoMark sent by Sony’s mobile PR team as Gospel. That and the “best camera on a smartphone” results that Sony produced too. I’ll just ignore real-life situations and be like an iSheep ;)

  • Alvin

Lol yeah me too… Can’t sleep again tonight…

  • Alvin

Lol okay… You know It’s just a joke right?

  • ramuk

Even though Real Camera Expert declared Z5 as the best our “wise” Camera expert here will not agree with this result. And Yes, Samsung Paid Shill and Samsheep are super pissed. I’m so happy.

  • Chaturanaga Manchanayake

    :DD

  • Alvin

Yeah.. I’m so happy with competitors misery… Especially samsung’s

  • kirfer

Hey, don’t forget LG paid shills and LG sheep: we don’t want mr. DBS to feel forgotten, do we?

  • jokensy

Ha! Ha! Where’s Timel when you need him!? :-)

  • nfs2010

Woops – this is going to upset few people. Nexus 6P with its Sony sensor did pretty well too. Awesome job, Sony!

  • Comment_Cop

I just gave it a go in the shop and wasn’t impressed at all! Lots of noise even in light conditions and bad detail. I only gave it a quick go but still unimpressive. Samsung Edge was way better.

Its better than the Z3 though so still an upgrade but I expected better.

  • Um, I’m actually surprised. I thought that it would be, “Oh well, another case of nice try Sony when other phone manufacturers – using your camera lens – do it better.”

    Nice one! :-)

  • Vjekoslav Andric

    Just 87? Expected over 90 score…
Ah well, sure thing apple will buy the top spot I guess

  • Vjekoslav Andric

Actually if they scored photo the best means over 89 (s6 got that photo score), video is best there is, most certainly over 90. How then just 87?!?

  • Marinko Agic

    Yeah,fuck Samsuck!

  • Guest

Timel has retired. DBS took his job.

  • valentino

yeah but the details s6 got better because of that OIS. the video is always better in steadyshot. s6 or iphone OIS make some jelly effect. I have s6. but the details captured are much better with S6 from my experience with XZ3.

  • Marinko Agic

Dont forget that Xperia Z5 have brand new sensor, and stady shot second generation!

  • valentino

hmm some how off topics. but for the XZ5 the fingerprint sensor. sure it is cool but it’s not practical i think.. we can only access it with only when we hold the phone. what if the phone are on the table lying flat. hmm.. it’s inconvenient feeling to try sticking your thumb or finger on that side. I already imagine it now.

  • nfs2010

    Photo : Z5 -> 88 S6 -> 88
    Video : Z5 -> 88 S6 -> 86
    Total: Z5 -> 87 S6 -> 86

So the total score makes sense, I think?

  • valentino

can I have their job? how much you guys willing to pay me. XD

  • kun-dimon

U can use double-tap feature to activate display, then easy touch the scanner)

  • Matt

Prepare for rebuttal from our own “trusted ” camera “experts ”

Gosh, I wonder where DBS and he’s 808 are?

  • I’m trying to believe so too.

  • Gezati

    88*86/2=87 Z5 photo is 88 and video is 86

  • Vjekoslav Andric

Yeah it does, but that video quality deserves more than 90 in my book

  • Guest

Oh yes, you can very easily take DBS’s job. All you have to do is:
    1 – be extremely boring,
2 – never stop talking about OIS and how you can’t wait to switch from Sony to LG.

  • Vjekoslav Andric

I mostly hold my phone in my hand, so z5 placement is mostly more convenient to me than bottom bezel

  • Vjekoslav Andric
  • Guest

Flagged and on the list of reasons why Qualcomm’s profits are plummeting, respectively.

  • Gezati

Register your right index finger and/or left thumb

  • ramuk

You forgot about Alex Noris. DBS has a point about OIS though. OIS certainly helps with low light photography but saying this every time and bashing Sony for not including it in every single comment is super annoying. I think he sometimes forget that Its not his personal blog. His camera analysis capabilities is questionable and arguing with him is useless because he thinks he is always right.

  • nfs2010

So the closed-loop actuator based stabilization works ‘mainly’ for Video? That doesn’t make sense. But it’s Sony lol I hope Sony would officially throw out some more info on that.

  • ramuk

Thats my thought as well. I think the OIS (Whatever kind of OIS it is) Sony implemented in Z5 series is super useful in video. But not as great in photography. I read articles that Apple will feature dual camera with their future iphones and if Apple go with dual camera then rest of the mobile industry will surely follow them. And in duo camera there will be no OIS. Well this is pure speculation from my part but I think Sony maybe didn’t include or invest in the traditional OIS because they didn’t see any future of traditional OIS in mobile photography.

  • Andreescu Daniel

You can register more fingers, you peoples can’t read nothing only complaining, if the phone is on table pick it up you won’t loose a hand, childish

  • Matt

As if Sony read this blog and trying to silence the troll, who actually knows nothing

OIS is good and helpful but the jello effect In mobile camera are awful(which is not found on my DSLR., I suspect phone OIS need to counter more movement) . I would rather not having it and eliminate the disgusting bulge of a lens. :)

Finally, Sony is there where it should always have been. Definitely gona buy Z5

  • kirfer

    You… You don’t want OIS?!
    W… whaaaaaa…?

  • Bowie

Anyone still wanna bitch about how bad the stabilisation will be without OIS? No? Okay…

  • Bowie

Was it ever in a bad shape, because I can’t seem to remember a time where Sony wasn’t best with Camera sensors…

  • nfs2010

Both approaches ultimately play with lens movement & optical path. One may be more/less effective than the other in video/photo. Closed loop one does a hell of a job in video (run-time stabilization through continuous feedback from the position sensor/gyroscope along with DIS) & it should still make a difference in still photos. And yes, in your face Samskunk!

  • nfs2010

Z5 slaughtered the competition in DXO’s video stabilization. But I think their weighted score has to include other aspects as well.

  • Vjekoslav Andric

Nope….S6 maybe just in lowlight scenarios

  • dragonsneeze

So much drama multiple finger prints and multiple angle touches while set up and it should be fine.

  • nfs2010

There are two kinds of low-light cases.

    1. Real low-light case – You need high ISO/low exposure time. Xperias will destroy the competition there. But all reviewers purposefully skip this part.

    2. Night shots with bright objects. Xperia’s can’t fully keep up with OIS counterparts if you have shaky hands.

    I’ll take 1 over 2 :P

  • seattle tech

Lol have you been waiting for years and 5 generations of Z phones to finally say that? With a 1 point greater score

  • ZoubIWah

note that the camera is best “all round” which includes things like flash and stabilization

performance where the z5 gets a lot of points.

artefacts, noise and texture are still below competition on this test and are what matter to most people thus why you’ll here the z5 camera isn’t as great as X or Z.

Note their cons for the z5, in fact:
    – Artifacts visible with blue sky saturation. (76 and 75 score, thats low..)
    – Skies sometimes burnt on high dynamic scenes.

Think about it that way: you get a car with the best seats in the market by far, the best paint job, awesome electronics, self-driving, etc. But the engine sucks. the average score will still be high but the car is useless.

The z5 isnt that bad, but with that artifact score there WILL be complains that while its better than before its not great yet.

Note: im a z3c owner and I love it. the camera aint bad, but its no match for the ip6s or sgs6e. hoping the z5’s will be close enough as it definitely improved.

  • seattle tech

    Love the video stabilization

  • Brick

This is good news. I love my Z3 but the Z5 is getting harder and harder to resist.

  • nfs2010

The engine here doesn’t suck like the way you’re trying to make it out to be. Z5 got better score than S6 in color & noise – That’s a big part of the engine. It also destroyed the competition in video stabilization. That’s also an integral part of the engine.

  • ramuk

I always learn a lot of stuff just from reading your comment. :) Your link is broken BTW.

Off topic – I want to learn about how 4K screen works on Z5P. I have no idea/knowledge about how rendering works on any type of device. Basically what is rendering and how does it work? We all know Z5P has a 4K screen but I read that most of the time it render in 1080p resolution – what does it mean? What happen to all those extra pixel when its render in lower 1080p resolution? Do those extra pixels simply stop working when rendering in lower resolution? Even when its basically render stuff in 1080p there is still over 800 ppi pixel present there right? Could you give me a simple answer/explanation on this this matter ? ( I hope I’m not confusing you with stupid question, he he he).

  • valentino

No i mean it’s little simpler if they put it near the huge bezel at bottom. well for a simpler scanner and unlock. maybe Z6 got that.. it’s not childish nor complaining. it’s a critique. an idea.. maybe.. sigh..

  • valentino

yeah it’s easier if they put it at bottom bezel.

  • valentino

OIS,808,OIS,808,OIS,808,OIS,OIS,808,OIS,808,OIS,808,OIS,OIS,808,OIS,808,OIS,808,OIS,OIS,808,OIS,808,OIS,808,OIS,OIS,808,OIS,808,OIS,808,OIS,… hahahah okay.. that’s the best i can do..
right now I want to switch from S6 to XZ3+. but overheating make me think twice. so i need some real XZ3+ user opinion.

  • Timel

The forum is so dead without me. iPhone 6s has not been ranked yet. We will talk afterwards.

  • valentino

it’s not drama bro. a great design should make your life simpler not only about aesthetics. maybe they can do it in Z6.

  • Vuyo Ncube

If they can slap on OIS with their dope SteadyShot and the SD820 for better PDAF, they’ll stay comfortably in front of any iPhone or Galaxy!

  • ramuk

Timel, DBS, Alex Noris, Abdul Ghani, Zero+, logitechfan, Muhammad Najmi Mohd Amir . Thses people are simply troll.

Although he jump to wrong conclusion about Z4/Z3 plus I really like that dude named Faisal Armand. I don’t see him around lately. Wander what happen to him.

  • Something that makes Sony fags smile for a while

  • nfs2010

Fixed both links – good reads. Let me know if still broken.

I also learn a lot from your comments. Keep it up :)

On to Z5P, it’s always a 800ppi screen. Some apps just won’t or won’t be allowed (by the OS) to use it. For example, SD801 (AC) is 2.5GHz CPU, but lots of tasks will never use the whole 2.5GHz speed. It’s still a 2.5GHz SoC.

1080p rendering on 4K is kind of like the 20mp to 8mp down-sampling Xperia cameras have – the direction is just the opposite as we’re rendering here instead of capturing a scene. We’re throwing out the extra info in some case (like displaying a 8K picture on a 4K screen at 1080p resolution) or we’re just not generating the extra info in the first place from the GPU (like rendering UI & contents from apps at 1080p on a 4K display). The key advantage is the performance due to less stress on the GPU (for example, compacts always put out higher FPS results than regular Z5 even though they have the same GPU). As far as the pixels go, the unused ones will just stay ‘off’ or flat as you can see in the first picture.

    http://www.j-display.com/english/technology/lcdbasic.html

Another advantage is the lower power consumption. Even though the extent is debatable. Some sources will tell us that LCD’s power is mostly determined by the backlight size (other than resolution). But Z ultra & Z1 had very similar battery life (the display technology was a bit different though). But I still think by turning off pixels, we still save a considerable amount of energy as you don’t have to burn electrical energy to drive those pixels as you could see from the JDI link.

  • dragonsneeze

It just seems like you’re making up a problem that may not actually exist. It probably can recognize your fingerprint without picking it up, at the worse case you’d need to lift it up a couple of milimeters. It does make your life simpler, it’s better on the side for a lot of use cases. If they were putting aesthetics first they would not give up the iconic circular button.

  • valentino

hi tim. so tell me about yourself. how come you become famous one here.. hahah i tought you are a Xperia user too. i think you once replied a comment from me at xperia z ultra. if not maybe wrong person..

  • Timel

I used Xperia Z2 and made it known. Now am going for the Moto X pure. Will share the pictures tomorrow.

  • valentino

you not using XZ2 again? ah yeah i remember i used z2 too. yeah you are the one answer my comment. hehe
about the 6s. here are the comparison. but no XZ5. but IP6s vs S6. yeah IP6s losing to S6.

  • Flythe

Au contraire: I don’t usually operate my Z3 Compact whilst lying on a table, but whilst holding it in my right hand. In this way, the power button can be comfortably accessed by my thumb. I cannot say that about the bottom bezel. If a sensor positioned there means that much to you go for Samsung or Apple and become happy.

  • Timel

They’re troll just because they said bad things about Sony smartphones

So what are u? A blind fanboy?

  • Flythe

May I introduce myself? Smiling Sony fag, a pleasure to meet you. And you must be then… a butthurt S6 user with nothing better to do than annoying other people?

  • mawhob22222

Hhhhhh now Samsungarena is not happy

  • Miguel Ortiz

Samsung uses their own but mostly a Sony sensor, Apple not sure but I wouldn’t doubt it if it was Sony

  • Timel

    Different just 1 score???

Still waiting for the real world photos anyway, I really don’t care about the numbers, I just don’t wanna lie myself with DxOMark’s scores, have high scores while the results in real world are horrible ? No thnkx

  • nfs2010
  • Raj Singh

Even if Sony does have the best camera, the public will have no idea because Apple and Samsung’s marketing will drown this out.

  • Billy de Fretes

so you want a huge bezel at bottom just for finger print sensor while most of the people complain about huge bezel for every xperia phone

  • Alvin

Oh yeah… You’re so right.. But colours in videos and photos are a bit better and more saturated on z3 than s6

  • Alvin

I know… That’s why i think they should score it higher lol

  • ack

Closed-loop actuator FTW! I still thinking they should have called it “Retina stabilization ™” or some other stupid marketing ploy. Oh well, at least this is the first smartphone that’s actually usable for taking videos without standing still as a mannequin. ;)

  • Emmanuel Alexandre Tavares

Yes, #4, just 2 points of picture above. It’s nothing and the graphic still wrong.

  • Miguel Ortiz

The S6 and Edge use either a Sony of Samsung sensor, depending on the model

  • Sreekanth Namboothiri

The day we all Sony lovers were waiting for <3

  • ????

i’m a big big big sony fan but let’s accept it – even dxomark says (examine the sub-ratings) that image quality is still better on s6 and g4.

xperia z5 is the best overall (because of the speedy autofocus, white balance, and impressive stabilization). well, for me it’s the best when pixel peeping is not allowed. the fast autofocus and lens are ideal for everyday use. for competition (tripods involved, with still subjects), samsung and lg still win.

can’t wait til sony finds a way to incorporate OIS in their devices without the bulge and when they are finally able to produce sharper images on 100% zoom

  • ????

they have better lenses and software though. good for pixel level comparisons but not for casual everyday use where the xperia’s faster lenses tend to be more useful.

  • ????

    he said software.

if you examine the earlier samples taken by bloggers and take sites, they’re too noisy. the samples shown on dxomark looked impressive.

i wonder where they got their unit. i hope it’s not specially provided by sony.
dxomark claims that they buy the unit they test when the units are available. i hope that’s what they did because that would be great for buyers. perhaps sony tweaked the software for the commercially available units

But I still use my Z2 to shoot great pics wherever I go
    https://www.flickr.com/#/photos/125751132@N08/

And I actually visit this site often, reading news and seeing comment section. And yes some of the trolls you mention are bad enough (but they still have some or few valid points, open minded in some areas, or shame the same hobby as me which is photography). But the worst is definitely Abdul Ghani tho :( he is 100% closed minded to anyone that doesn’t have the same opinion as himself. And the way he talks (using swear words & profanity) is completely childish and immature, indicates that he is an internet hero but a coward in real life.

And btw about my flickr page, I don’t mean to be boasting or something. But even guys like Alex Norris and other PureView fanboys praise it. Abdul Ghani said my pics are crap, and then I check his flickr page.. Well he may use QX30 but his shots are collosal bore to see and he doesn’t have anyone following his flickr page but his dearest friend Naail Zahid lol.

  • DBS

Alternatively you can also be completely clueless about technology and a coward that comments under “Guest”. Though I admit it’s less appealing that way.

  • DBS

Of course it is. Nowhere on Earth is the Moto X ahead of the Z3+, iPhone 6+ or the Nokia 1020.

    No serious person trusts Dxomark.

  • DBS

    You and me.
The only thing Sony would need to do to add OIS without the humps would be to either: 1 – move the camera do the middle and at a curvature do the back of the phone (think G4, Nokia 920); 2 – make the phone thicker. I would prefer this second option. I don’t recall ANYONE asking for “paper thin” phones ever. I’m pretty sure the average consumer would not mind a thicker phone if it meant a better camera. Besides that, since Sony was making it fatter, they could take the chance to add in Qi charging and even a larger battery.

Unfortunately I don’t see any of that happening any time soon. Not while Sony keeps putting form over function.

  • Lol i just post a hateful comment to see how many people respond towards my comments, well done guys

Also to answer your first question, rendering is the process of generating frames that would go through buffer, controller to show images on the display. Check this one out :)

I think it’s a matter of strength and weaknesses. The Z5 will be better for impromptu pics and action shots, since it generally uses a higher ISO with super-fast focus and a bigger sensor. I think Sony’s contention is that if you are taking scenery pics, then you’re better off with a DSLR, which takes much nicer still photos than any phone could dream of. G4 and S6 are more jack-of-all-trades, but master of none. For on-the-go pics and videos, the Z5 will be hard to beat.

  • Shubham Mutreja

LOL but real photographers know that camera performance is more about photographer. right?

  • nfs2010

A picture is worth a thousand words :D So Ramuk, I was wrong about unused pixels being turned off. So the display driver takes pixel values of 1080p content & replicates it four times with identical values. I was under the impression that it would fill the voids with 0s to save power. That would make the image dotted with blacks. But I thought our eyes couldn’t resolve that & it can be used to save power as Sony stated. Looks like the power saving comes from the reduced stress on the GPU. My bad :P

  • Faisal Armand

That’s what I am talking about. Let’s say if you own Sony A7R II or Nikon D810 but you don’t shoot nice pics with it, you’re basically just wasting the camera and the money.

  • nfs2010

I have a question for you. If there’s a hypothetical image with alternate ‘pure’ black & ‘pure’ white RGB values like this

    WBWB…..
    BWBW…..
    WBWB…..
    BWBW…..

    …………….

What would it look like to our eyes?

  • nfs2010

Google couldn’t find me one :( I think I have to create one image myself. We don’t premium to check it out though. I should make a 1080p B/W checker pattern for my Z3+ :D

My name is “Guest”. I see that my name gets you super butthurt. See, I’m so generous that I’m ready to change it if it means you’ll stop crying. Any suggestions?

Try acting like the man you’re not and use your real name and face. Though I understand trolls normally are too coward to do that.

  • valentino

No. That’s bezel is good for landscape usage. I never complained about those huge bezel. And it’s look good. What i want to say is. If sony going to keep that huge bezel as their design. Why don’t they use it as fingerprint scanner. So those huge bezel is not that useless as some people think.

  • valentino

No. You guys don’t catch what i mean. The power button can still on the side its good. What i mean. You can turn on the phone by double tap and then scan fingerprint on the lower bezel it doesn’t have to be a button there okay? Just a fingerprint scanner so that huge bezel doesn’t feel that useless by some people who think that bezel are bad. For me its good for thumb rest in landscape mode. Now the case is if you want operate it on the table it’s easier right if you put it on the lower bezel. But please don’t accuse me about Samsung or apple fanboy. I just want to share my idea. I like they out the fingerprint scanner on Lower bezel but i don’t like those home buttons.

  • valentino

So what’s the point of your replying my comment with this video? I don’t get it. You want to tell me that S6 better than XZ3+? Vice Versa?

  • valentino

Hahahaha. It’s super effective. Some of them are blinded that they don’t want to open their mind again. Great job for Sony though but as always no one will stay on the top forever. S7 or IP7 will kick Z5 from the top. Like the S6 kicked by XZ5. And that’s the flow.

  • Melfes Wired

the really sub pixel structure is more like:
    RGB as one
    GBR as next line
    BRG the next

    And in full hd

    RGB RGB
    GBR GBR

Will render as on single pixel, but still with subpixel processing, makes it sharper than FHD

  • Melfes Wired

For the gods sake, why do you think turning off pixels on a lace panel will save energy? LCD panel doesn’t produce light itself, it needs a backlight! By turning off the pixel it will requires more energy to achieve the same brightness, since other 3/4 of the light is blocked by the off pixel

  • a.mubher

As for stills. Z5 scores better than S6 in Colors, Autofocus, Noise, and Flash.

As for video, it scors better in Colors, Autofocus, and Stabilization.

  • ack

Check out the video… the closed-loop actuator at work. Seriously impressive!

Z5 scores better in color reproduction… So where is that guy who argued that S6 pinkish reds samples were the most accurate xD

  • Matt

Oh noo a bulky phone with dead OS and have literally nothing at all except the camera. Oh wait I have a DSLR ;)

Did you even read what I said? You save energy by NOT applying voltage.

Ah, I see. You’re not some other company’s mindless fanboy, but just some random asshole. I must apologize. Sometimes it’s hard for me to distinguish between them. Have a nice day, though.

  • Flythe

Ah, I understand what you mean. Nevertheless, this way you’ll need two actions in order to unlock your phone instead of one. And unlocking the phone whilst holding it in the hand would be less comfortable (being it only a sensor or both a sensor and a button either way). So, I still prefer Sony’s choice of fingerprint reader placement over anything else and I hope they keep it.

  • valentino

yeah but i still in love with those beautifully designed power button. hahaha.

  • nfs2010

LOL – you’re asking about Z3+ overheating & the video shows S6 heats up a bit more than Z3+ after 4K recording . So that was the answer :P

If you’re still concerned about heating, you probably should consider Z5 as it has one extra heat pipe compared to Z3+. Z5’s camera is also better.

  • Alex Norris

LoL) Xperia Z5 has 87, and S6 86 points)) That means, Sony don’t beaten Samsung.

And the future SGS 7, Lg G5, will smash Xperia Z5 so easily!

Seems to me Iphone 6S takes 88 points)

  • Matt

rendering ? it means that the phone outputs 1080p resolution unto the screen .

no, the PPI stays at 800+ regardless of the image it shows (in this case 1080p) and all of the pixel works .

Power consumption on the LCD stays at 4k too.

so it is basically just like computer, if you play 480p youtube video on your (presumably 1080p screened PC) the physical resolution of the display is fixed, only how the GPU manage power will change depending on what is on the display.

so why it renders 1080p at lall ? to save power in GPU output , since snapdragon 810 gpu will conk out battery if it output 4k all the time , it does it in 1080p so that the chipset and GPu consume normal power just like the one on 1080p phone.

downside the asset might normally look blurry, but im sure sony knows this and do some of their display trick to counteract this downside.

  • Lol, why I’m called as as****, mind your word buddy. I use Sony phone as my daily driver. Be polite here. No fanwars here. I’m not supporting anyone.

yes, the power consumption of the display stays the same but not when it comes to the power consumption of the processor, graphics card, and memory.

Could you come up with some better reasons for your point? Yes, turning off the pixel uses less energy than turning it on, but you are using the screen, you want to have the same brightness by turning off 3/4 of all pixels? You gotta use a three times brighter back light lamp to achieve that, since now you only allows 1/4 of the back light to get through.

You think the panel drive will cost more energy than the back light lamp? Don’t be ridiculous

  • JJameson

The reporting on the subject has been lackluster. My understanding is that the image will be down-sampled so the image will retain a lot of the sharpness available at 4K but will offer the real estate of 1080p. No one has said if it will be done by the display driver or the GPU, though. Either way, down sampling isn’t very taxing on the gpu anymore so even if it’s done by the GPU, it won’t make any real difference.

  • kaostheory

Because 4 pixels still only output the same nits as one on a 1080 screen. 4 100 Watt led light bulbs would have to be dimmed to put out the same light as 1 100 Watt led bulb therefore using a similar amount of energy. Obviously the math is slightly different especially with the analogy of light bulbs but hopefully you get the idea.

  • nfs2010

To have same brightness ‘per on pixel’ – you don’t have to increase the backlight at all. Identical brightness per pixel in use is still there!!!

  • Akand

Sony Alpha team just teamed up with Sony Mobile division. On the first step they blew up all others. Now imagine what will be the score of Z6/7.
    #RebornOfking #SwitchToSony

  • Akand

OIS vs DIS race is like DSLR vs Compact. At first a lot of experts criticized Compact cameras and claimed compacts aren’t as superior as DSLS. But Sony didn’t stop and kept developing new compact. Now you see, Sony Alpha 7 ll R/S both won majority of the experts.
This is how Sony will prove they know better about camera tech than expert photographers.
Just give Sony some more time and enjoy the game. I do believe Sony will be able to prove that OIS can be thrown away without compromising anything.

  • deekbee

Most of the prior generations of Sony phones have had great cameras and generally been fairly lousy with their post processing, resulting in ok, but never that great cameras.

I still don’t think DXOMark deserves any time, they’re an incompetent bunch of . Real world results tend to show their lab tests to be useless.

  • nfs2010

So hypothetically the dimming factor (for the backlight) is around .25 & it’ll be applied only in 1080p mode. But the dimming factor on the ‘same’ display will be 1 (no dimming) in 4K mode. So if premium has a 600 nits display, its brightness could get as low as ~150 nits in 1080p mode. I’m not sure if Sony will go that far on the dimming side!

  • deekbee

Precisely. Their rankings are utter fabrications that have no bearing on real world results.

  • ramuk

  • ramuk

I’m glad to hear that you are still here.

  • Melfes Wired

LMAO, same brightness ‘per On pixel’, but now you have only 1/4 pixels turned on, how could you achieve the same brightness of the whole screen as before?

  • Alex Norris

One point in photo, you really thought it great result..?) With new innovation sensor which has bigger size than middle sony sensor staying in not new Galaxy S6, it looks great ?

  • ramuk

I wouldn’t say they win over majority of the expert yet. There are still some major issues that is still preventing professional photographer to move to Sony from Canon, Nikon like
    1. Focusing is still not as good as DSLR. While its improved vastly its still slightly behind DSLR. And I heard that Pro needs a camera that they can trust. Mirrorless is still not there yet.
    2. Battery life is nowhere near the DSLR camera can offer and this is a major problem my friend.
    3. Sony lens ecosystem is still relative small. And their lens are crazy expensive yet they don’t perform as good as other company’s lens. And lens adapter’s performance is still not good enough .
    4. Their camera interface is terrible.
Still I believe in Sony. Its only a matter of time they solve these issues. Good thing about Sony alpha camera division is they really listen to what the critic says about them. Sony’s jpeg used to be quite bad but they significantly improve it with A7 r2. And the improvement can also be seen in Z5 series jpeg also. Compare Z5’s photos with Z3’s and you will see vastly improve jpeg performance.

  • nfs2010

LMAO or you use all pixels & crank down baclight to save energy. The brightness of the ‘whole screen’ will never be the same either way.

  • valentino

ahhh i see.. yeah the s6 is overheating too.. but i thought about fast charging. in my country the XZ3+ doesnt support the quick charger. it will take another 2 hours++ charging time like the old Z3. I don’t like it maybe i will wait for the XZ5.

  • Alex Norris

    Half year difference !

  • nfs2010

I think all Z3+ supports QC 2.0 compatible chargers? You could get use one of those? You could also use an ipad charger or something similar. It works as a quick charger for Z3+.

  • Shubham Mutreja
  • nfs2010

Woops. My bad. Fixed my post.

  • Matt

    Exactly

  • valentino

No the quick charge only works for xperia z3+ single sim only. Others likeZ3 or Z2 for Japanese version only. Except xperia z3 compact. All the xperia z3 compact version support quick charge 2. That’s why it make me feel sad and mad. Hahaha

  • nfs2010

Ah, forgot about the dual. Well, it also does support QC – but partially LOL

  • JJameson

Sony phone cameras have always(well, since the z1) ranked near or at the top on release. To say otherwise would simply be untrue. This year has been the year of the camera with every manufacturer massively stepping up their game versus the far less drastic improvements in years past. We finally have a very solid camera in every major manufacturer’s devices and none are significantly better than the others.

  • EQ

Though I hold little value for DXO Mark as just them rating the Iphone 6 so high invalidates their competence. But absolutely that Z5 is the top camera. It’s just that a Xperia Z1 with marginal gives better photos and videos with more detail and correct color reproduction while having as little as possible over processing for final image compared to Iphone 6/6s Plus. Take a look here at GSM Arenas comparision tool and set it to scale to 12MP, http://www.gsmarena.com/piccmp.php3?idType=3&idPhone1=5596&idPhone2=7243&idPhone3=6665 . And here for video comparision, http://www.gsmarena.com/vidcmp.php3?idType=2&idPhone1=5596&idPhone2=6665&idPhone3=7243 . Now factor in that the image algorithms got better with latest update for Xperia Z series mobiles it would look even better. Then the Z3 with some small modifications to camera even more and Z5 even better with Sonys new generation camera module.

  • Alex Norris

So strange… Because i see a lot of trolls, like you, ramuk.xD

  • nfs2010

It’s actually a very good shot from a 2011 phone. X10, Arc both have really good cameras compared to those junks on other android phones. I still think Arc camera is better than 2 gen newer Z/ZL’s camera. Arc’s pictures were very neutral & clean.

  • sevgili

I know this, but all of them from 2015

  • Svnjay

That is the very definition of trolling.

  • Svnjay

Z6 will kick the S7 from the top.

  • valentino

i once see the youtube video about it. it’s the same charging rate the QC and normal charger from the box. 30 minutes for 20% battery. Later when Z5 out I will trade my s6 for Z5. if not at least Z3+ price will dropped. hahhaha nothing to lose.

  • valentino

and so on. the newer phone will kick the older phone. hahhha until they score the camera for 99.8, 99.7, or 99.9.
    hahhaa

  • seattle tech

Sony phones have consistently ranked lower year after year with the same camera modules. Saying otherwise just shows biased towards sony. I think this year is a direct result from sonys huge investment in their camera dept.

  • JJameson

We are talking about 2 years here with 5 flagship product launches. To say year after year is simply biased against Sony. Z1 was just behind the pureview, z2 was the best on the market when it came out, z3 wasn’t really an improvement on release from the Z2 but has had a lot of improvements through software updates. Either way, it was only behind the Note 4 and Iphone 6. The z3+ was about the weakest entry compared to the competition, but it was always meant as nothing more than a placeholder. Even so, it was only behind the S6, G4, and note 4 on release. I’m not a fan of their reliance on the same module for so many models either, all I am saying is I think it was overall the right choice, even factoring in that it allowed other manufacturers to play catch up and ultimately surpass what was available in their own models. After all, most people here getting pissy about which manufacturer has the best camera are 1. completely misguided in their focus as again, these are phones not dedicated cameras and 2. probably don’t spend a significant enough amount of time actually learning and understanding how to properly use the equipment they do have.

  • Alex Norris

I’m disappointed in Sony, because of best camera when Z5! Large flap nothing behind! Worse stabilizer, poor sharpness, much noise even at slightly low light. 5x Clear Zoom is also a fake, inferior to that of the competition, Slowest tripping time in comparison to its competitors! All lie at the best camera ever! Have all Xperia Z was gahabt always a loyal Sony customer and each model has to this day the same camera quirks since Z1 !!! Ciau I switch to LG!

  • kaostheory

600 is the whole display not each pixel. 4 pixels don’t have to display as bright as one to get the same luminens.

  • Alex Norris

    That`s real Sony)

  • nfs2010

That’s it? Trying to get around energy conservation will all pixels on while shooting for the same brightness? ROFL Did you even go to middle school, man?

  • nfs2010

‘Same’ as a ‘different’ 1080p display. But it can not be the ‘same’ as the light output you’d get by rendering 4K on the ‘same’ screen. In other words, 4K mode will be brighter than 1080p mode on the very same display as long as we’re doing dimming only in 1080p mode to reduce power consumption while using all pixels in both modes. That seems to be the only way but that also sounds very strange.

  • MMElliot

I only want to say one thing: such a great camera and software, yet, no APIs once again from Sony to support RAW? Sorry, I take Sony as seriously about aiming this phone as a photographer’s tool as they do..

  • kaostheory

Sorry for the confusion. I used light bulbs as an example. There’s no difference between 1080 and 4K for brightness of the pixels. 4 pixels on the Z5P offer the same brightness as one on an older 1080 display but individually don’t have to be as bright, therfore using similar power( 4-25w led bulbs put out about the same light as 1-100w led)

  • kaostheory

There’s no dimming, they are dimmer to begin with as there’s more of them.

  • nfs2010

“There’s no difference between 1080 and 4K for brightness of the pixels” means there’s no power consumption difference between rendering at 1080p (using all 4K pixels) & redering at 4K on the ‘same’ panel ? Only saving comes from the GPU which is negligible according to the PA link I posted before.

  • ack

They didn’t turn on SteadyShot. There are several videos online showing with and without stabilization.

    https://youtu.be/q7JNUZEvd_A

  • Vjekoslav Andric

Yeah indeed, I think its a great result. Whats your problem?
Phone cameras have technically come to near peak max possible capabilities, I seriously doubt samsung or iphone will easily beat this score.
There is a limit to camera tech you can put into a normal design phone, and juice to squeeze out of it…

  • Battal

Good job Sony, but the noise still high even in daylight shots !

  • Adhi Suryana

They used Z3 with Kitkat for comparison, actually Lollipop make a lot changes in camera resuls :3

  • kaostheory

Holy crap. There’s no dimming or difference on the Z5P. But there is a difference between the Z5P and any other device that only has 1080. The pixels on the Z5P don’t have to be as bright individually as the pixels on a different device because there’s more of them. Let me make it as simple as possible. It’s not the amount of pixels but the amount of light given off per square inch that determines power consumption. For rendering the gpu has to use more power for more pixels.

  • nfs2010

Holy crap, still comparing to other devices. The saving comes only from GPU side which is arguable. Back to point 0. Have a good day!
