Sony opens camera for Xperia AOSP

Sony Xperia AOSP CameraSony Mobile has made available an experimental AOSP (Android Open Source Project) camera for developers. The idea behind the move is to encourage development of custom ROMs with basic camera functionality. We say ‘basic’ because the open source camera does not include any of Sony’s enhancements, the camera is based on the Qualcomm framework and is not “designed for daily use.”

It is worth flagging that this developer-only camera framework has a number of limitations. For example, the camera is not calibrated therefore the picture quality is not to the same standard as what you are used to seeing with the Xperia camera software. Sony also cautions that “you will experience lags and crashes.”

The experimental AOSP camera framework is available for the following devices: Xperia Z1, Z1 Compact, Z Ultra, Z2, Z2 Tablet, Z3, Z3 Compact, Z3 Tablet Compact, Z4 and Z4 Tablet. Support for the Xperia Z5 series, E3, M2 and T3 will be added in due course. If you want to find out more hit the source link below.

Does this means full manual controls and raw for xperias mentioned above?

  • Hideg Jen? Péter

Yes! I wish had Xperia SP with Camera API 2.0 (It’s not real, but dream.)

  • rmartinezdl

While this could happen you would lose the awesome low-light and scene capabilites of your camera, afaik

  • Chan Kin Cheung

This is a trick from Sony, Sony could use this to dramatically save development costs. That’s how: Sony released a camera framework and let the devs figure out how to implement manual camera, and implements it. After that, Sony uses the open-source nature to take back all the source codes.

  • EQ

That’s good becouse then Sony will know what the community wants and get a hold of alternative implementations. Much like devs releases betas for users to test them out and tweak. So all in all it is good Chin Kin Chong.

  • Faisal Armand

Personally, I wouldn’t mind losing scene modes as long as I get manual shutter speed controls. It’s not that i’m saying scene modes are bad, some of them such as night scene and fireworks are capable of producing some of the best low light images produced by a smartphone.

My own samples of night scene mode:
    https://flic.kr/p/xEK2Mv

    https://flic.kr/p/uDpuxC

If I shot those images with manual controls, the effect would’ve been more artistic and also the quality could be better.

Both of my samples has ISO 125-160 and shutter speeds of 1s. If sony has manual controls like those of LG G4, I can decrease the ISO to 50 and slowing shutter speed to 2s –> more awesome artistic effect and better details and less noise

And oh, I have tripod and gorillapod so I don’t have to worry about handshake blur

  • Shaktimaan

Good for us :p and while they’re at it, might as well hire some xda-developers members to their software development team.

  • kido

have you tried other manual camera apps from the playstore? since i think manual camera api2 is compatible with the z3+ and z5 series

I’m not going to spend money on both, not even the Z5 as the battery life is not as good as Z2

  • Faisal Armand

I have the camera fv-5 also. The good thing about it is it can shoot slow shutter speeds at full resolution.

  • when will get for M2

  • Thomas Cho Him Chung

No it’s fake. I have the manual camera app on my Z5 and when I try to adjust the shutter speed or ISO, the app crashes and closes.

  • Thomas Cho Him Chung

Isnt it when it comes to slow shutter speed the max resolution is reduced to 2.1MP only…?

  • when this update will roll for Xperia M2?? I’m waiting desperately for my camera update.. :/

  • DBS

    Don’t count on it.

  • DBS

At this point I would so welcome if Sony would actually NOT attempt to do mobile cameras anymore…leave the software to others.
If you’re not going to put real effort into it and are just going to make it worse and worse (the new UI update on the Z5 is even more limited in manual mode than it was on previous phones! wtf?!) let someone else do it.

I can’t count with the fingers in one hand the amount of cameras on the Play Store better than the Xperia default one. If Sony would open up the camera2api on the phones, maybe I wouldn’t have had to relegate my Z3C to the position of a glorified mp3 player.

  • Faisal Armand

    Perhaps you’re right

  • Faisal Armand

2.1MP resolution is open shutter program. The slow shutter option is controlled exposure.

Long shutter has the same principles as night scene mode in stock app and long+ mode has the same principles as fireworks mode in stock app

They do need to allow third party to access more camera functions aswell as up it up with their software but even then the Xperia Z1+ line stays on the top beating the competition. Even my Z1 beats the glorious Nokia 1080 all in all aswell as giving competition to the S6 and G4 and trouncing all the Iphones (I dont count in the potato sized 808 as we are talking phones here not bricks a la 80’s).

  • DBS

I was with you until you said that an Xperia can beat the Nokias 808 and 1020. Sorry, they can’t. And they are no match to the G4 and S6 either. If you think they are, that speaks more of your inability to use the cameras than anything else. I really wished they would, that’s why I moved to Sony when Nokia went away. But the sad reality is, they don’t.
Xperias are now 3 years behind the competition. They have the latest sensor and lenses but they stopped there. The rest of the essential parts (additional hardware like OIS and good software) are missing still.
I really hope that changes sooner than later. ’cause apart from the cameras, Xperias are great phones. Specially the Compact line.

There are several parts that make up the whole. I give you the Nokia 1080 does deliver better detail but messes up the whitebalance to often like the G4 and sometimes the S6. The later two also has aggressive postprocessing giving the photos often the cheap digital camera look with oversharpening and mediocre image depth. Depth, detail, white balance, FOV, the Xperia Z1+ series just pulls ahead although Z5 needs some tuning as my Z1 can match it and even outdo it in some areas like clarity and detail. They need to step up their game with the software. They did go manual on the Z3+ with Camera API 2 so a real question mark why they didn’t do it for the others.

  • DBS

Ok, first of all, there’s no such thing as a Nokia 1080. It’s 1020. The fact that you don’t even know the name of the phone makes me doubt a lot that you even have it.

    Now, on to the camera:

” messes up the white balance to often like the G4 and sometimes the S6.”

Uh…no it does not. I never got burnt out skies on the 1020, for example. On the Z3 (whose camera is still better than the Z1, mate) it always burns out unless you point the camera to it.

“The later two also has aggressive postprocessing giving the photos often the cheap digital camera look with oversharpening and mediocre image depth.”

You can only be talking about the Xperias here. Because it’s the Xperia that over-sharpens everything and leaves photos with so much noise that they quickly become really ugly to look at.

“Depth, detail, white balance, FOV, the Xperia Z1+ series just pulls ahead”
No, it does not. Sorry mate, you may want to try to convince yourself of that for whatever reason (you can’t afford one of the other phones, you’re not old enough to buy them yourself etc) but neither the Z1 steps ahead of the G4 and S6, it most certainly doesn’t step ahead of the 1020.

As for the rest of your comment, I share your doubts. Although I honestly start to doubt that they ever opened camera2api on the Z3+. We never actually saw any evidence of that working. All we saw was a photo of a Z3+ with the Manual Camera compatibility app saying it did. But we also saw that on the Z5 and we know it’s not true.
The reason why I think Sony doesn’t do it is precisely to avoid people using other camera software with different algorithms and then realise how bad Sony’s own software actually is.

  • EQ

Spelling error. Not easy on the mobile with Disqus wonky formating. It’s quite well know from reviews and tests that they all do have far more white balance problems than the Xperia phones. It’s evident in pretty much every comparision.

Z3 and Z1 ha same camera module IMX220 but Z3 sharpens the image more compared to Z1 and Z2. I would take the Z1 algorithms any day over the Z3 ones. Z2 has a bit more sharpening but that said none of them has as aggressive sharpening and tonal contrast as the G4 and S6. You can see how they are getting visible light halos, dark lines and contours. And you dont even need to pixel peep to see it. Gives it the cheap digital camera “solution” look in many situations.

And comparision made at roughly same shutter speed and ISO. Point still stands.

  • DBS

Because the 8 is right next to the 2…

Anyway, no mate, the problem is that your “facts” aren’t facts at all. The 1020, the 808, the G4 all of them produce better photos than any Xperia.
Your point doesn’t stand because you know why? Because I don’t rely on online writers who do this for a living to know it. My certainty is based on facts.
And you know how I got those? Because these in the picture are sitting right in front of me. I own them all. I wasn’t paid to write about them, I didn’t get them for “review” nor anything alike. I simply bought them. And from all of these, the Z3 is the one that produces the worst photos of all by a long shot. Be it in sharpness, white balance or low light.
The Nokia 1020 in auto mode does have the tendency of putting a slight yellow tint over the photos, that’s true. However, I can correct that on manual mode. On the Z3C for example, I can’t correct the burnt out skies because I can’t access basic stuff like shutter speed. For every flaw any of these (Nokia 808, 1020 or the G4) have in automote, that can be corrected through the manual mode. The same can’t be said about the Z3C.

  • EQ

Then your Z3c is broken. Replace it at nearest Sony center.

  • DBS

Except it’s not. The camera simply isn’t good. Simply accept it.

If users don’t complain and keep living in denial like you, Sony will never actually bother in improving anything. And that’s not good for anyone.

(By the way, this is the second one I have. The first one the motherboard suddenly died. Both of them produced the same overall crappy pictures.)

(post scriptum – don’t upvote your own comments…it makes you look desperate)

  • EQ

Find nearest Sony center they can help you out. Seems you got 2 bad phones becouse anyone saying the Z1+ series takes bad photos are either using a broken camera, cant use the camera or is just talking nonsense.

  • DBS

    Mate, you’re simply in denial.
I know of NO ONE who says that Xperias take better photos than those phones in question. No review EVER has ever said it. My own personal experience confirms it.
No. My Xperias have no broken cameras. They simply have shitty cameras. Big difference.

You simply want to believe that your phone has the best cameras because you probably can’t get others to see the difference. And so, you try to delude yourself.
But the facts and the evidences all contradict you. If you want to live in your delusion, be my guest. But know that no one with a functional pair of eyes will ever believe you.
The Xperia phones only take better photos when compared to the likes of Motorola, those Chinese brands, HTC or any LG prior to the G3 or Samsung prior to the Note 4. And never has an Xperia taken better photos than a Nokia phone.
That’s simply facts. And facts, I’m afraid, aren’t “debatable”. You can deny them, but you can’t prove them. And you simply can’t prove your statements on the Xperia camera quality.
(and no DxoMark faked “tests” are hardly proof of anything)

  • EQ

Well I excluded the 808 since that practically is a digital camera with a slapped on “Nokia 3310”. And if you read carefully I am talking about the balance between detail, white color and correct reproduction of colors. And I did prove my point with a on the go photo so your comment about it having “shitty camera” is well.. busted!

  • DBS

The 808 and 1020 are virtually identical. Only the OS differs.
I know what you’re talking about and yes, the Xperias are still the worst.
The photo you took doesn’t prove your point. At all.
It’s a very dark photo, with all the light sources overblown and very little detail. All of that is due to a shitty camera. Why? Because, first and above all, it lacks OIS. Secondly, it lacks proper software to allow you do actually adjust shutter speeds. The only thing that photo doesn’t suffer that I know the Z3 would, is the excess of artefacts. Because your phone doesn’t have the high values of ISO that the Z3 allows which would make it even worse (although a hell of a lot brighter).
So unless your point was to put the Z1 against the Z3, you proved nothing.

  • EQ

It’s a night photo, low light where cameras are put to the edge. Even a potato can take fantastic photos with strong day light but fail miserably as the lighting intensity goes down and cant bring up any details in dark areas. Z1 goes up to ISO 6400, Z3 upto 12800. The scene in my photo looks 1:1 as it should so why would I want it to hit higher ISO? When you learn more about photography you will understand the value of maintaining the original scene as it is. Good luck sports! ;-)

  • DBS

“Even a potato can take fantastic photos with strong day light but fail miserably as the lighting intensity goes down and cant bring up any details in dark areas.”

Oh, I get it! Your Z1 is a potatoe! Now it all makes sense.
You may want to check your eyes then, mate. Because since that photo “looks 1:1”, apparently you’re living in a world where every illuminated sign is just an overblown blur of light and there’s absolutely no definition around you.

Seriously, maybe you should be the one taking that advice and go learn somethings about photography. It would also do you really good to try and get other cameras. So that you too can compare them instead of relying in your fantasies ;) I’m sure you can get good deals on the Nokia 808 and 1020 on eBay and probably even the G4 and S6.
Thank you, I retribute your good luck wishes and I would also like to wish you a quick recovery for your eyesight ;)

  • EQ

No need to be butthurt becouse you where proven wrong matey. Now go and take a beer and relax before you pop a vein. :-)

  • DBS

Mate, you proved nothing. I actually have all the phones.
All you posted was a dark photo with overblown light and no definition at all. If anything, that proved how bad Xperia cameras are ;)
