Xperia XZ1 Compact leaked in rendered images

by XB on 17th August 2017

in Rumours

Sony Mobile is expected to announce three new Xperia smartphones at the IFA 2017 tradeshow at the end of August. While we have had a good look at the Xperia XZ1, there has been little on the Xperia XZ1 Compact, which is expected to be a true ‘compact’ flagship, unlike what we saw last year with the Xperia X Compact.

You can check out a number of renders below, including a 360-degree video, based on factory CAD information from @OnLeaks, who has a good track record of getting hold of this information. So, when looking at the images below, remember they represent an illustrative example of what to expect, based on the dimensions and other details provided by the CAD.

The design looks like a slightly thicker version of the Xperia XZ1 that we have already seen. According to the report, the Xperia XZ1 Compact will have a 4.6-inch display with dimensions of 129.5 x 64.5 x 9.4mm. We will bring you more news as we have it.

Via @OnLeaks and 91mobiles.

Thanks Moisés, Samuel and Yut!

  • DBS

    I like it.
I just keep wishing they added bloody OIS and an AMOLED screen. It’s not an unreasonable request…

  • Cecco1970Effeffe

    Yeeesssss!

  • Love it ;)

  • KarFar

    DOPE

  • disqus_WKLUV3ngYy

    give me z3c Hanging hole…..

  • Alex Norris
  • BGDoesGaming

freaking brick! nfc logo in the middle suggest this is a all plastic device…. top bazel looks nice and small while the bottom looks huge! probably a render mistake. lets see how things turn out to be.

  • dragonsneeze

Looks like a hybrid between Z5C and XC. 9.4 mm is pretty thick, with SD835 it’ll be a battery champ. There were rumors about FHD-HD screen just like 4K-FHD of Premiums. Doesn’t look like much but we’ll see how the internals improved. I wouldn’t be surprised if this came with SD820.

  • Jadranko Pavlotić

    Fat

  • Mike Testoma

    Power button FPR + 3.5mm + usbc + 2800mAh in 4.6″ case.
They also put EIS in camera finally.

Wow it’s really amazing if it’s true and finally something to upgrade from Z3C.

  • Julius Koroll

Okay that design-choice was obvious. I wonder why they don’t even make a little more space on the screen so the 4,6″ are TRUE 4,6″ and not minus the navbar but whatever. With real flagship hardware this thing will be a blast. Not for sales but for a few costumers.

  • Julius Koroll

They sadly did that a little on the old Compact too with the top being smaller.

  • Mark Permann

I don’t see much reason to upgrade from my X Compact. But I like that they’re sticking with the design. “Fat” means, comfortable to hold in hand. “Bezels” means, stereo speakers. “Plastic” if it ends up being that…well….I get that people like metal but I like plastic. Plastic scratches, but so does metal. Plastic chips and dents, but so does metal. I’ve not seen a lot of evidence that a dropped metal phone holds up better than a plastic one – they both look generally terrible after a drop. What plastic isn’t, that metal is, is heavy, sharp and slippery.

  • BGDoesGaming

nightmare for people who have OCD for aesthetics

  • RockStar2005

Why do you say that Moisés? My HTC 10 has an aluminum unibody, and it has NFC too.

  • Where is my lanyard hole, wtf.

  • Emil Oskarsson

I’m sure it won’t look fat when you see the finished product and not just a rendered image based on CAD dimensions xD

  • Emil Oskarsson

Bezels doesn’t matter on a smartphone of this size, it’s already small and there’s no other phone out there to compete with it anyway. About the thickness, let’s hope they made it that thick to be able to squeeze in a battery of at least 2800 mAh in that small package :) I would rather have a phone that is 1cm thick than a phone that is 0.7cm thick if it means having a bigger battery and I’m not the only one :)

  • Emil Oskarsson

You mean OIS I guess? :) Since EIS have been on Xperia phones since the Xperia z2 :)

  • Emil Oskarsson

It will come with snapdragon 835 not 820 :) And 9.4mm ain’t thick xD

  • Battal

    Midget !

  • Moisés

Last time I dropped my z3+, metal frame got deeply scratched.
    Not that tough

  • Moisés

    X Compact is 9.5mm.
    So this one is thinner

  • Moisés

    On the back too?

  • ruba

    x compact same desing :(
    z3 compact is still better

  • RockStar2005

Correct………..actually, by “unibody” I mean the entire body minus the front screen. I wish Sony would do this with all their Xperia flagships, but I know not everyone feels that way. lol Still, I think it would be best, esp if they went with titanium. I don’t want to use cases anymore. Slip-on wallet cases are ok, but even that I don’t see why we still need in 2017. (I use a slip-on wallet for my 10, but no longer use my Spigen clear case.)

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01EBB2FCY/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (I bought the Brown one)

  • The One

Despite the hideous design, those specs in this form factor is a GAME CHANGER for Android devices in 2017. The only other downside is when Sony inevitably charges $600 for it.

  • The One

If you mean OIS, then where did you get this info? Sony phones have NEVER used OIS.

  • The One

Give me the Z3C dimensions! This looks so boxy and ugly

  • Vinny Conforto

I hope it won’t end up like the X Compact

  • Vinny Conforto

    true

  • Vinny Conforto

still 9.5mm is a bit too thick. It should be around 8.5mm

  • Moisés

    Loop makes it thicker.
Battery might be 2800, it is unknown yet

  • Moisés

XZ1 is metal and nfc is beside led flash.
    XZ has on the front..
    It is very confusing.

  • Hideg Jenő Péter

Looks like the better specs, maybe i’ll buy this….
I’m using a Sony Xperia SP.

  • Moisés

    Price drops a bit fast.
Here you can get XZP 20% cheaper already.
Z5 and XZ lost 50% of price after 1 year.

  • Moisés

Depends.. When you own z3+ , 95% of phones look thick.

  • rbnbvb

    Love the phone, always Sony!

  • zip

I love the thickness and the bezels. I may get it.

On an unrelated note, when are you going to fix your damn mobile site, Xperiablog?

  • Phil Gym

because people don’t buy Xperia phones

  • Phil Gym

Made of plastic doesn’t necessarily mean it looks cheap. Sony’s popular headphones, XB950BT and H.ear, are made of plastic, but they look really cool

  • Namako

After the Xperia X Compact was already this fat, I hoped they would go back to Z5 Compact thickness (about 1mm thinner). The bezels look a bit better than on the XZ1. On top is good, bottom meh, I wouldn’t mind as much if they would put buttons in there so you have more of the small screen.

With this thickness I hope that it has at least an awesome battery, that’s what bothers me the most on my Z5. It drains super fast.

  • Phil Gym

Actually the size of Z3C is perfect, the design as well

  • Namako

    and please no plastic/glossy backside

  • Phil Gym

I want to see real pics. Please someone dig them up

  • Moisés

Samsung phones have huge price drops ..
Here S8 was 4000, now you find for 2800

  • Moisés

Front cam of z3c is way smaller..
    Easier to fit in.

  • Moisés

Many people did not like the X Compact body.
The plastic of XA is way better

  • RockStar2005

Oh wow! So you’re 100% sure the XZ1 will have an aluminium body?

It doesn’t matter to me if it’s on the back or front. But I’d be happy to know that Sony is going metal! lol

You sure it’s not Alkeleido or whatever? lol Just checking.

  • Francis Troy Fabrigas

    XA Ultra series front camera.

  • Francis Troy Fabrigas

AMOLED is an out-of-reach tech for Sony mobile division yet, and there’s still no perfect version of this technology – Sony always delivers high quality products and don’t take everything that’s trending yet.
Example is small bezels. Many phones with this feature are extremely fragile and their main panel breaks easier because of little protection.

OIS is a thing of the past. EIS already works better on videos, and so will it be on photos. We only need to have it fully working on both and it’ll blow everything away.
The only issue is thay Sony wants to produce motion blur-free photos and no type of stabilizer is fast enough to do that job, which is why the XA Ultra series only have OIS on the front camera.

  • Francis Troy Fabrigas

Yeah not thick. My phone has 5000mAh battery and is 10mm thick. Neither do I feel like it’s too thick to be unbearable to hold.

  • DBS

“AMOLED is an out-of-reach tech for Sony mobile division yet, and there’s still no perfect version of this technology”

Well, there’s no perfect version of any technology. I’m pretty sure Sony could develop AMOLED displays in-house. And if not, they could just buy them from Samsung. They already buy a ton of other components anyway.

“Sony always delivers high quality products and don’t take everything that’s trending yet.”

Well…this statement has been more accurate in the past. These days Sony settles for delivering ok enough products to break even.

“Many phones with this feature are extremely fragile and their main panel breaks easier because of little protection.”

I have yet to see evidence of this. Real numbers that is. Not “YouTuber X dropped the phone and it immediately broke”. Because I’ve heard this before about glass phones for years and both my Z3C and my S7 have fallen several times and never shattered.

“OIS is a thing of the past. EIS already works better on videos, and so will it be on photos.”

    No. Just….no.
    This is absolute bullshit.
There’s absolutely NOTHING in software that can make up for hardware stabilisation when it comes to photography. That’s why ALL the premium DSLR lenses have it. In a smartphone, where everything is really small, it’s even more essential to have OIS on a phone.

And no, EIS on photos will never work as well as on video because the capture of video is completely different. A video is a stream of single shots. A photo is the equivalent of a single frame from a film. So when you’re shooting a video, software can stabilise the image because it’s capturing a ton of frames a second and it uses that to crop and adjust as the frames are being captures. On a photo you don’t have that luxury. You are capturing ONE frame and the best the camera tries to do is to stabilise the image before it captures the frame. Problem is, without OIS, if the shutter needs to stay open for long, it immediately blurs the photo because when it’s capturing the photo, the EIS stops.
For example, even with OIS, if you have to leave the shutter open for longer than around 1/8th of a second, the photo risks being blurry.

“Sony wants to produce motion blur-free photos and no type of stabilizer is fast enough to do that job”

For Sony to achieve that they would desperately need OIS. They will NEVER achieve that without it. With OIS they could achieve that in daylight because the shutter speed can be reduced to high values like 1/1000th of a second. Sony would also need to completely re-write their software and enable a REAL manual camera mode. But they can achieve that. And if they combine OIS with EIS the results can be even better on photos (OIS and EIS together on video is normally not ideal which is why the likes of the G6 allow you to turn off EIS on video).

But make no mistake: Xperia cameras desperately need OIS, they have needed it for years. And until Sony stops being stubborn and stops trying to pretend most people use their phones to shoot video instead of pictures, their cameras will continue to suffer.

But this stems from a deeper problem with Sony: they refuse to accept change. They’re desperately clinging to the idea that people will still buy Point & Shoot cameras when the reality is that the average consumer nowadays uses their smartphone to take photos and no longer buys P&S cameras.
If they stopped wasting money on pointless P&S cameras that no one will buy anymore and invested instead in their mobile imaging division, they would be in a far better position today, I’m sure of that.

  • Cakefish

I had to get rid of my Z5 Compact after only 6 months because I wasn’t satisfied with the camera. Can I trust Sony again? I’m not so sure.

  • Thomas M

Yeah I know, a really big problem when you try to slide it under doors and such normal phonehanling activities. :P

Do you really perceive this as a problem when is under 10mm thick?

  • Night Guy

Looks so sharp and so brick.

  • arcu de triumf

A bit thick like the anti-shock mobiles. Anyway it’s good that Sony keeps the Compact models (under 5″), with good specs. The rounded edges, not so good…can’t get a propre grip. Good comeback for silver too.

  • Dany

+ for amoled. That’s the only thing stopping me from buying an Xperia

  • Dany

Please AMOLED! IF u give me that, I’ll consider buy an xperia!

  • Talos the Robot

I agree with you but the PlayStation VR already uses a true RGB OLED panel and it is produced in larger scales than Xperia phones so it is not impossible for Sony to do that.
I still prefer HDR LCD panels for their brightness and the biggest amount of colors they produce, but Sony should offer an alternative for people who prefer the Oled technology just like as they do with their Bravia TVs.

  • laci_csk

because people don’t buy Samsung phones

  • Mohammed Alaskar

the phones getting thicker and bezels also , sony become lazy lately

  • deekbee

Game changer like the Z5 Compact was? It’ll be a good device, can’t see it doing much to improve sales.

  • Gahead

DBS forget it, I already comment about OIS many times, Sony wouldn’t EVER put OIS in the rear camera, 5 axis will be there, because i don’t know if you’re familiar with Sony’s ALPHA MIRRORLESS camera, it’s a brand thing about Sony, I just wish they make the sensor move like the 5 axis of their Mirrorless, so again forget it, no OIS for any future Xperia, btw Sonu Xperia’s 5 axis or EIS is unbeatable at the video dept. Photo yeah it isn’t that’s where the TRUE 5 AXIS needs to do.

  • deekbee

I’ve stuck with the Z5C despite the camera; I just carry a second phone for imaging purposes (typically either my Nokia 808 or Lumia 930, depending on circumstances)

    THICC

  • Ryuzaki Raiga

i don’t mind with thickness but those bezel look………

  • Ryuzaki Raiga

i want ZL dimension with 4.6 screen

  • Simbarashe Masauko Nyoni

Fuck it’s another brick with uneven bezel

  • The One

Yeah, the Z series cameras were terrible in nearly all conditions except bright sunlight. The X series is improved, but low light performance still produces way too much noise.

  • The One

You’re absolutely correct, but the best selling Sony smartphone of all time was the Z3C. Plus, Sony doesn’t sell anywhere in the U.S. so it will never sell as much as it did back when it partnered with U.S. carriers. Design does matter and the XZ’s large bezels and square frame are not appealing to the masses.

Other than those major flaws, there is not a single Android device in 2017 that has these specs in this form factor. That’s why it will be so important.

  • The One

You are correct, but we shouldn’t have to wait for price drops. Sony should price the phone properly from day 1 to avoid losing potential customers who don’t want to wait 6 months.

  • The One

The Xperia Z3C had bezels nearly half this size and still managed to use stereo speakers. The bezels are way too big for these tiny, quiet speakers. I’d rather have one loud speaker than two quiet ones. Sony phones have never been loud enough to hear a youtube video in anything other than a quiet room.

  • The One

I clearly meant for the main camera sensor…

  • Moisés

Amoled is a kind of oled.

    AM = active matrix

  • Moisés

    High ISO on auto..
    Just set it 100

  • Moisés

    Z1, not z3c

  • Mark Permann

I never owned the Z3C. I shopped it…didn’t like the glossy glass back and flaps. I agree with you that the Z3C bezels are smaller & more attractive, but I’m pretty sure “nearly half the size” is an exaggeration.

I owned the Z5C and I do agree that I wish the X Compact speakers were louder. Still, I really enjoy the X Compact’s loop design and USB-C, particularly as my laptop charges with USB-C. I prefer the plastic over glass because it feels less fragile even though it is more prone to light scratches. Tradeoffs…I suppose there’s no perfect set of compromises.

  • Moisés

    19/8 MP

  • Mark Permann

Excellent point on “no other phone” – I laugh when I read some reviews that say the X Compact is the best small Android – what other small Android is there that is current? Sony has no competition at all for this form.

  • Jadranko Pavlotić

It’s fat, Z3C was great, this I don’t think so

  • Quentin Grs

Too thick only with a protection for me. Raw it provides quite a good and easy grip.
Completely agree for the glossy plastic backside, it’s not ugly but feel cheap in the hand, get dirty too fast (pls no glass…) and the micro scratch appear way too fast.

  • Cakefish

OIS is not a thing of the past at all. Google is the only OEM that can get away without using it and still produce great images but even the Pixels could have massively benefitted from having it. Every other OEM that doesn’t use it really struggles in low light photography… Sony included. Video stabilisation is only part of what makes a good camera and still image photography is a hugely important factor that can’t be ignored.

  • dragonsneeze

Both are thick. I wasn’t comparing. 0.1 mm won’t matter, and we all know if it’s 9.46 mm Sony will say it’s 9.4 so.

  • dragonsneeze

I know, I’m just saying if they did that I wouldn’t be surprised. 9.4 mm is thick. You notice it more in time as you use it. A compact phone should also be thin enough. 8.5 is fine. I personally wouldn’t mind a bigger forehead. But I’m way past compact territory anyway. I just think that some minor tweaks could make this a better product.

  • Rohan

Sony actually has a perfectly good OLED technology with JDI. Why wouldn’t they use it is a different question

  • The One

Our sources differ then – or maybe its a semantics issue. The Z1 may have sold more over-all these years, but the Z3C sold more upon initial release.

  • The One

Correct, but most people use Auto and don’t take the time to make adjustments in manual mode.

  • comme des garcons

It’s so thick it has to come with a beefy battery, 2800 or more. and HD or FHD?

  • comme des garcons

The thing is…many more people prefer bigger phones. 4.6″ is a rarity

  • comme des garcons

Can you find it somewhere? 2600 or 2800 makes a big difference

  • comme des garcons

Sony is going to play a contrarian this year in terms of phone designs

  • ymytbb .

    fingers crossed

  • ymytbb .

It should be thinner. Otherwise, it looks like going back to the Z1C, meaning IFA2017—>MWC2013 UNLESS it will come with surprising specs especially battery size

  • ymytbb .

Z3C is the most popular and acclaimed Xperia phone

seems like the final design is different, that the NFC position is now on the back right at the side of the flash, instead on the metal body (which in this video the placement is still on the metal body, which doesn’t make sense)

  • Christian Kogler

Bezels still are a bit too large, however I like the design of the phone.
I hope that we get a big battery and would love to see wireless charging for once.

  • azzido

    I wouldn’t say it better.

  • azzido

5 axis is not the same as in professional cameras, there you have a real hardware solution. In Xperias 5 axis is just laughable software implementation that works only in 1080p 30fps videos and only on close object so in 99% of time it is simply useless… Lame and useless solution.

  • azzido

Do not buy it, Z5 series suffered from extreme blur on the corners and so called XZ “Premium” suffers from abnormal distortion, sorry didn’t manage to solve this issue and moreover send official statement that there is no issue while entire Internet proved it. Low light pics are still a bullshit, same the camera app which is garbage. They do not even alow you to get rid of it as for example Pixel’s camera that was ported with HDR+ works on most devices except Xperias as sorry didn’t allow it. Do not buy their crappy marketing related to cameras. This brand is gobe, they are years behind the competition in terms of design (they stopped at first Z, was it 2012?), screen, camera and now even software is constantly reduced as they are cutting off all the most recognized features/functions of Xperia brand to the level inclhding Album widget and many more…

And now premium is abandoned in terms of software updates, anytjing that comes are pure google security patches, copy paste of this code. No bugs are fixed.

Go buy anything chinese, you will see no difference at all.

  • arcu de triumf

As design but as quality…Not really. Many unacceptable flaws with it. I have one right now and I sent it 3 times to the service (screen, camera focus) and I didn’t risk to sink it.

  • azzido

Fat princess, let’s start to call it like this :D

  • azzido

Plastic is simply a no go for most of the people at this price point. Dot.

  • azzido

Actually it depends on what kind of glass it is. If it’s drama like xz premium hence gorilla glass 5 then it will scratch easily, if it is gorilla dlass 4 or any other tempered glass it will be better.

Please note there is some difference in premium panels, no matter both are claimed as gg 5 the front glass is more durable and scratch resistant, shatter proof as well. Seems sorry cut the costs on the back panel… What a shame.

  • azzido

No it’s same and not worth it.

  • azzido

No in mu opinion current bezels are too small. They should make it 3 times bigger that the plane could start from it.

  • azzido

    Crappy 720p…

  • iArvee

I agree with the blur on the corners, but that was back in MM. When the Nougat update came out for the Z5C, I didn’t notice that anymore.

As for the XZP, I don’t get the abnormal distortion that people claim to have. I see their pictures and the actual distortion, but do remember that not everyone has that issue. People will always flock to support forums when they have problems with the phone. I also do get the Wifi dropping issue, but all you really have to do is just turn wifi off and on again. Even though you shouldn’t do that, at least it’s a simple workaround while fixes are being made.

“Premium is abandoned in terms of software updates”. Lmao. How do you know? Have you spoken to Sony about it? I own the XZP and the Z5C. Not to defend Sony or anything, but also the S8 and G6 don’t really have new software updates aside from security updates.

I suggest you buy the phone first instead of reading about it online. XZ1C seems pretty nice (in terms of design).

  • iArvee

Professional cameras are not the same as mobile cameras. While mobile cameras are getting closer and closer to professional cameras, the professional cameras will always be on top.

Get a professional camera instead of whining about it, bro.

  • jmaxim917

Looks like a brick. Also bottom bezel should be same size as the top.

    Please be real! :)

Yeah, just slide it to ISO 100 … and you will have a 2 sec exposure everywhere that is not bright sunlight.

I am aware because I’m into photography, but the average user who isn’t commenting on this article will only point and shoot. Any additional steps will be ignored. In this scenario, Sony phones fail hard.

I always thought the z5c was a little too thick as well.

  • The One

True, but if done properly it will sell. The iPhone 5se couldn’t stay in stock because of demand for a smaller flagship

Maybe you are aware. But Moises isn’t.

Maybe some cameras combined with soft included in other brand is getting closer, son is definitely not getting closer, I got the feeling it is even opposite and definitely years behind competition. I hope they stop biase people with faulty advertisnment, I am glad that soon it will be prohibited in European Union and it will be easier to go to the court because you were impacted by biased advertisnment about superior camera and you got faulty camera with blur, distortions and who knows what new issues will they bring in their new devices, I am sure they are working hard on delivering new issues…

  • azzido

fixes are being made, which ones? So far we did not receive any fixes to all highlighted issues. Are you able to ptove it? No, and sorry for example already mentioned they will not fix abnormal distortion issue.

Yes it is abandoned fro updates like bug fixes and new features, improvements hence updates.
Only copy paste of security updates or constant reduction in existing features / functions (to a degree they even removed Album widget – lol!). Samsung does not remove 90% of their most brand recognized features and functions. Sorry is simply making user experience worse and worse with each single software downgrade they provide. Please stop calling it “update” as proper word is downgrade…

Unfortunately I own it and it was too late to bring it back. I sent it to sorry then as faulty flop and it only got replaced but it still suffer from same engineering flops performed by sorry…
