Sony Japan has this morning launched the Xperia ZL2 (SOL25) for Japanese carrier au by KDDI. The handset shares many of the same features found in the Xperia Z2, although there are differences. You will notice from the Xperia ZL2 pictures below that the handset design is different to the Xperia Z2, the ZL2 has a plastic back as opposed to the glass one found in the Z2.
The Xperia ZL2 has a smaller 5.0-inch 1080p display (Xperia Z2: 5.2-inch) and a sealed 3000mAh battery (Xperia Z2: 3200mAh). These design changes result in a smaller, but thicker handset. The Xperia ZL2 has dimensions of 137 × 72 × 10.8 mm, whereas the Xperia Z2 has dimensions of 146.8 x 73.3 x 8.2 mm. The Xperia ZL2 is also heavier at 167g (Xperia Z2: 163g).
The Xperia ZL2 also has Full-Seg support, the only other difference is that the Xperia ZL2 has internal storage of 32GB, compared to 16GB for the Z2. Other features remain the same including the Snapdragon 801 (MSM8974AB) chipset, 3GB RAM, 20.7MP Exmor RS rear camera, VGA (0.3MP) front-facing camera and IP55/IP58 certification.
The Xperia ZL2 will be released at the end of May 2014 in three colours (black, white and turquoise). We love the turquoise version and hope Sony launches such a choice outside Japan at some point in the future.
