Sony trademarks Xperia ado, Xperia amo, Xperia ilo and Xperia sora

in Rumours

Sony Mobile has recently trademarked four unusual Xperia model names over at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). They include the following: Xperia ado, Xperia amo, Xperia ilo and Xperia sora. These names have so far not been trademarked at the OHIM, the European equivalent of the USPTO, which may suggest that these will be US bound handsets only. All four names were filed on the 18 June 2012.

The names don’t exactly roll off the tongue, but Sony Mobile has been using some unusual naming conventions recently what with the Xperia miro, Xperia tipo and Xperia sola. Of course, there’s no guarantee that there will ever be any handsets launched with these names. After all the ‘Xperia duo‘ has been trademarked for years but has never been used. Anyway, what do you think of the names?

I think that samsung got it all wrong, you see Sony has phone names from outter space .
But does it mean that these names would be for phones that will be released this year ?

  • Felipe Pimenta

    Those names are beyond horrible.

  • Rammstone

This is getting out of control. They don’t need to release 400 different phones each year. I bet they would sell more collectively if they had 3 or 4. One is just slightly different from the other so it just creates unneccesary choices.

  • LOL …. which sony mobile manager find those names , just curious … :D

  • Silver Scythe

There has to be a good reason behind names like those. I wish I knew what it was. I mean, who comes out n says ‘Hey lets call this phone ado…and this one amo…and this one ilo’. Well, ultimately names don’t matter much to me. Sony’s phones are always pleasing and like no other.

  • i’m gamer

    i wish xperia play 2 !!!!!!!!!

  • Soban

There is an LTE and a HSPA model of the Xperia ION.

  • I guess if they can’t get the names right, at least make their specs right.

  • Soban

I completely agree. Its like what HTC did last year, and now it seems like Sony are doing what they did. If only Sony went back to what they did last year and the year before, we wouldn’t have as many phones flooding the market and more originality (Not releasing a remake of Neo or a Dual Sim version of Tipo etc).

  • nfs2010

Well, that’s the only way to take on Crapsung. They’ve been flooding the market with their phones every other day and it seems to be working for them.

  • “sora” reminds me sky in Japanese.
Maybe others have also their meanings.

  • Jake

It mean chaos , colour and sky . I cant see anything wrong there ,
You don understand japanese doesnt mean its horible .

  • lol

In my language ado means something like “you bastard” its gonna be fkn hilarious when going to a shop and ask for xperia ado in here LOL

  • how would be xperia ado-pado?

  • BoDhi2010

    sky sounds better than sora

  • Grishm

What’s with Sony and its umpteen low and mid-end phones?! I’d rather prefer Sony coming up with an ultimate flagship which would put Samsung Galaxy S III and other flagship phones to shame.

  • TheSonyNation

Why does Sony give their products the same name as Dutch football/soccer clubs?! o.O
Xperia ado (ADO Den Haag(= ADO The Hague), but everybody calls it ADO) and PlayStation Vita (PSV)

And these names pretty much suck =

  • cesar

    sony xperia te amo :$?

  • ltd

I don’t care what they call the phones, as long as Sony starts to make Cyber-shot phones again.

  • rafi

  • Sony invests close to $1 billion in the production of “stacked” smartphone camera sensors

  • Trixz_D

It is stupid, back in the standard phone days it was acceptable but now it just isnt. I bet they will say next year that most of these phones haven’t sold as well as they thought. I love Sony but this is stupid as hell get some sense sony and stop been greedy

  • are u sure ? it is interesting to know how they find names for phones .

  • Dacha

You are not the only one. I go the same problem. It only worked once in the last 2 months.

SM has recently filed trade mark applications in Europe(OHIM):

    You can search here:

  • paul4id

Stupid confusing names. They should just keep the same name from year to year. E.g. 2011 Xperia Arc, 2012 Xperia Arc, 2013 Xperia Arc etc. This means that the consumer develops model recognition.

  • naathaanS

ilo (or iro) means color, sora means sky the other two i don’t know

  • paul4id

Another disadvantage of so many models is that it it creates a disaster to support them for both custom ROM and application developers.

Wise up Sony. Restrict the models tovariants of the 2011 Xperia series.

  • Felipe Pimenta

The translations are nice, but the names are kinda bad. But this is my opinion.

  • rafi

Nothing seems wrong to me if sony release a veriaty product lineup. Its just give customer wider choices. Not forcing to buy all sony line up anywhere.

  • ami

SM has filed yet another trade mark: Xperia Prima.

  • aeon

    could they be the Xperia Z, C, E and Y? :D

  • thanks :) how u figure out ?

  • naathaanS

    I’ve learned some japanese before

  • nice idea :) glad to meet you :)

  • Jamic

“Ilo” In my language means happiness :D !
