Sony Wena_1Sony Japan has developed a new product in its “First Flight” crowdfunding platform in the form of the Wena Wrist smartwatch. The Wena watch takes a different approach versus other smartwatches, fusing all of the main technology into its wrist band with an analogue watch face.

The Wena wrist includes NFC, as well as other features expected of a smartwatch, including notifications of incoming emails, SMS and fitness logging (steps and calories burned). Notifications are received through LED indicator lights on the band or vibrations. Interestingly, Sony has also made sure the phone is waterproof too. Several versions of the watch are available with prices starting from 34,800 yen going up to 69,800 yen.

This had better be a preview for what we should expect for the SmartWatch 4, Powered By Android, or so help me…

I’ve just about given up on getting a metal strap for my SW3, at a decent price. And to think I argued with The Mrs. and a friend that it’d be the best watch for me, mainly because of the interchangeable bands, and that I wouldn’t be stuck with the boring, rubber band for long. I laugh. (TBH, its still the best watch for me, but I took a technical loss, thanks to Sony)

That is just pure class. Wish the sw4 could take a few pages out of the wena’s design.

  • echomrg

is Sony really resorting to crowdfunding or did i miss something?

Basically personal project of Sony’s employee approved by Sony.

  • Tjaldid

Basically putting money where your mouth is, if you want the product to be made fund it, if you don’t they won’t make it

  • echomrg

yeah, well, that’s not how entrepreneurship works nor what crowdfunding should be used for.

especially because you have no guarantee they will make it, even if you fund it (at least that’s how kickstarter works, i don’t know how first flight handles this).

  • Le Kawaii Potatoe

    I want one.

  • Ana Heluši?

    Very beautiful

  • hocestquisumus

I don’t see that as a bad idea (in cases such as this). Let’s see if people are interested. They’re flinging more than enough sh*t at the wall with their whole alphabet of smartphones obviously nobody wants. Not a bad idea at all to get a feel for people’s interest in a certain product.

  • Geese Howard

Well look at the gaming industry such as Capcom and their Rockman (Megaman in the US) successor – Mighty No.9, it was crowdfunded too. Companies are willing to test the waters by asking people to so-called invest on their new project. Strategy works in a way because people will feel that they have contributed towards a project and being part of the birth of something.

  • Geese Howard

The design looks cool but the name? Seriously? Weeeena? Come one, I don’t want to spend my money on a good design gadget that is named like a sausage or a dick…. I hope they change it somehow! :p

  • El Capitan Morgan

Just cause your name sounds pretty?
